You know what? I can't tell if you are serious, but I used to work in a House of Correction for a few years. There are guys who do almost nothing but pushups and they are huge - and pretty darned ripped. Mind you they have nothing else to do but lift, eat, and rest. Moreover, they will literally do like 300-400 pushups in a day.

Depends on genetics more than anything, look at ex football player Herschel Walker, he claims to have never lifted a weight in his life. All he does is push ups & Sit ups. Of course he's a generic freak, but this is how he looks at 48 years old.

hw_101110.jpg

And if you are to believe what he says, he says he doesn't ever eat red meat, most nights he has a little fresh poultry with a salad and little soup. That could be anywhere from 400 to 1,200 calories depending on dressing used, and whether or not the soup is cream or broth based. But if you are only eating one meal it doesn’t matter.

he eats 1 meal a day, with very little protein and he looks like that. So he's proof nothing but push ups and sits up can make you shredded as hell :D

No matter what you do, you have to put in the work.

If you want to exercise at home effectively, I would generally recommend kettlebells. Just doing basic swings, cleans, jerks and presses will eventually put you in better shape than 99% of people. You only need a single kettlebell of suitable weight initially.

Ya and I knew a guy in highschool who was ripped and big. i asked the guy how long he's been working out for. He told me he never did. I was half his size and exercised everyday.

Moral of the story. Its genetics and if you aint there yet you aint gonna get there by not putting in the work...both in the kitchen and in the gym (not to mention rest).

So the answer for you(OP) is that you will not get ripped by just doing push ups. And you wont get big eithor.

No, and Herschel is lying.

There are plenty of people who back up what he says, and he's been saying it since back when he started in the NFL. That's a pretty strong accusation to make when you don't even know the guy. I have a neighbor who got out of Prison and is bigger than Walker by a decent amount. And I know for sure in Prison (at least in Cali) they no longer allow weight lifting. So he got big from doing push ups and sit ups. You should read up on Hershel, the other fighters at his training camp (AKA) talk about how can train at 100% for like 4-6 hours without taking a break.

Hershel's a total freak of nature, dude's about to turn 49 and he plans to try out for the NFL again and play 1 more season, and it's very possible he'll make it. He might not be close to the norm, but his body type is possible with exercising just using body weight. Prison dudes are good examples of if you have enough time to do nothing but push ups you can still get big as hell.

First of all, you look "ripped" if you have any muscle at all combined with no fat. You don't look "ripped" even if you have lots of muscle as long as you have fat.

Regular pushups and situps aren't nearly enough resistance to grow an appreciable amount of muscle. You can do some exercises without any equipment that are extremely high resistance (think hardcore gymnastics - handstand pushups, L-sits, etc.), and doing them diligently would get you a decent amount of muscle, but it is grueling work, you have to progress very slowly in technical ability and tendon/joint durability until you can actually start gaining strength in many of those movements. This stuff is risky, complicated and ineffective compared to just working out with equipment.

You can bet those prison dudes are using chairs and other makeshift equipment, fences, chinup bars, etc. and/or are doing hardcore bodyweight exercises if they are getting seriously muscular without weightlifting (prison food is probably not the best either..?). Steroids are also possible.

Only if you eat the right diet.

No single exercise will do that.

From wikipeida, I think if you do what he claims to do, it might .....

Walker is known for his unorthodox training and dieting methods. Walker says he sleeps five hours a night and eats only one meal a day (skipping breakfast and lunch). He is a vegetarian and his diet is made up mostly of soup, bread and salad. Walker has never tasted beer or liquor and never took aspirin or other type of medication.[citation needed] Instead of lifting weights, he has a daily regimen of 3,500 sit-ups, 1,500 push-ups and eight mile runs. Walker has participated in a variety of sports including football, Olympic bobsledding, track and field, taekwondo and ballet dancing.

Herschel Walker is probably one of the biggest fitness trolls on the planet....

Eating mostly bread/carbs, bodyweight exercises.

Basically about as honest as Roger Clemens/Mark McGwire getting in front of Congress and saying they never took steroids.

Probably the only bigger fitness troll is Greg Valentino

He's never oiled a day in his life. Very strict diet and workout regimen, he did do more than bodyweight exercises, he had a 5lb dumbbell.

I work in a prison and trust me, they do more than just situps and pushups.

My pecs are pretty defined, but I have a slim figure, so I don't get the disgusting man titties look.

Why do you think he's dishonest. He will tell you the way to some serious size is through some serious use. Ive never heard him say that he doesn't use. He may say that he doesn't sell for legal reasons but he definably uses.

That guy with the arms had big biceps in part due to the pressure that builtup from the infections he gave himself. There is a documentary on this guy. It's an interesting one.

Saw Hershel on a talk show of some sort back in the late eighties/early nineties, and even then he said he did nothing put pushups and situps (or was it pullups).

Yea, I only posted my sarcasm comparing Greg Valentino to Herschel Walker because I was astounded that quite a few people lacked familiarity with him to the point that they'd call outright BS.

Well Hershel does sound like a BS artist if you don't research him. I mean if someone came on here posting a picture looking like him, and they said "all I do is push ups and sit ups... Oh and I only eat once a day, it's a salad with some soup that's 1200 calories max and I don't eat meat and next to no protein" I'm pretty sure people would be calling shens left and right. He's proof that genetics are more important than anything. I could work out as hard as possible and eat perfectly and I'd never be close to the specimen he is.

you can make your muscles only so big without drugs. genetics plays most of the role. derrik rose for example is known to not even lift weights that much, hes just built that way.

you can tone your muscles up and make them puffier, but if you want to gain any real size you either need to do steroids or start lifting weights when youre 15 and dont ever stop. ever. the military even claims by age 25 your body has built all the muscle mass it ever will... so start young
