Can you get away with scraggle in a professional environment?

I hate shaving. I haven't shaved in a year. I do however keep my facial hair as short as a beard trimmer will allow. Would that be acceptable in a professional environment?

Likely depends on the environment, your position, and the company. If you're expected to maintain a business casual dress code with minimal face-to-face client contact, you'd likely be fine. However, if you're frequently interacting with others, I'd imagine they'd want you to be as clean-shaven and presentable as possible.

that is basically me
but there are people around here with very long "hippie" type hair, so just about anything goes as far as hair is concerned

Assuming its groomed/trimmed properly, there isn't anything wrong with it. If you looked like Jake Plummer, well, that's a different story.

lol @ Jake Plummer reference

but honestly, as an engineer who sits in a cubicle all day you could probably get away with it. If your a computer science person you would probably look weird if you DIDN'T have sketchy facial hair (sorry CS people, just in my experience :p).

I have it just because my facial hair doesn't grow very fast. I will shave if I have a mtg. As RB said, if it's trimmed there should be no issue.

You say CS people and I automatically think "counterstrike" people. I guess it's the same bunch, so whatever.

Yes. I see a few guys in the real estate business that get away with it.

Being well-groomed should be fine whether you have facial hair or not in most companies.

If you look like the unibomber or manson, etc chances are you are going to have a harder time getting a professional job.

I like my hair longer and less molded...at times it makes people take me less seriously.

I had a foo man choo type beard recently and the powers that be here all my comments after I shaved it off....they weren't thrilled with it, but I already had an excellent track record here.

Winnar. If you're put in a position where you are the face of the company, you need to be as presentable as possible.

Depends on what you do in the company.

Regular worker - yeah, most likely.

Tier 1 (team level) management - yeah, most likely.

Tier 2 (department level) management - no.

Tier 3 (division level - VP) management - hell no.

Tier 4 (CEO, CIO, SIO, etc) management - get the fvck out

Get a job in academic science. The weirder you look, the more "hardcore" you are.

<--- has a bushy goatee, 2 inch chops by the ears, shaggy hair, wears shorts everyday like a good doctoral candidate :p

I have a full beard but I keep it very short and neat. It is actually kind of disgusting when guys let their facial hair get long. No one cares where I work and it is a huge corporation that everyone knows about, which is nice because I hate shaving every day. I don't ever let the hair that isn't part of my beard get very long but no one cares if I don't shave it for two or three days. My boss and his boss frequently come into meetings with an unshaven face.

I don't quite see how well trimmed facial hair would be a problem for a higher up position. Richard Branson anyone?

I get away with the 5 o'clock shadow every day. It just looks better on me than a smooth shave. Plus it's easier and I hate razors, I use an electric trimmer.

Scraggle? I've never heard of that word......oh, you mean stubble. I don't shave on Friday's and I've never had a problem with it.

As long as you keep yourself well-groomed (you don't have a "molestache"), it should be fine.

Several of the guys in my office (myself included) have well-trimmed goatees and a couple have full beards. Nothing wrong with that at all as long as you keep yourself presentable.

At my work it depends on whether or not you're in a customer-facing position. Pale Rider's post applies as well.

I'm one of the hippie hair types, and I'm not alone in the office. It's a hair free-for-all here - but I work for an ad agency, so... YMMV.

Scraggle is a bit more than stubble. Two or three days worth of growth depending how fast your facial hair grows. Basically, its as close as my beard trimmer will get me.

i tried your method for a while and found it to more of a pain in the ass keeping it looking trimmed and neat than just spending 2 min and shaving it off.

I does take me about 5 minutes to trim neatly, but I only have to do it every 3 days or so. I find being clean shaven very uncomfortable, so its worth the trouble for me.
