Can you drive a stick shift?

I learned to drive on stick shift on tractors & farm trucks...a lot harder than cars.

lol...in stop and go traffic you just put it in first and let out on the clutch (get a bit of a gap) and then you only touch the clutch a few times the whole drive. At least it's that way for me...let the guy in front of me wear his brakes out
 
no, I've never had a reason to learn. I'm not sure I'd even want to... for me at least, I drive to get from point A to point B and I like doing so whichever way requires the least effort.
 
Yeah, but there's really no point.

City = Better for automatic.

Highway = Better for standard.

I mostly do city driving and I really get tired of shifting. Also, standards have a lot more parts that get worn out.
 
Yup. Bought the car the day before classes started, and drove my way to class the next day (had like 20 mins of instruction from a friend and the rest was all up to me). It was scary as hell at first 'cause you always think you're gonna stall out. After a while you get the hang of it and you experiment with it (faster accel, smoother transition, heel-toe, double-clutch...). I can't really do heel-toe cause of the way my pads are placed but i can sometimes do the Rock Left n Right. Makes driving a 120-hp Sonata Speed much more fun than it would be otherwise.

Automatics are boring now... I'll stick to Manuals for a long time to come.

too true

yes, i can drive stick (too lazy to vote in the poll so just add 1 😛). i don't agree that i will never own an automatic but i will ALWAYS own at least one stick car if i do have an automatic.

edit: theChort mentioned two reasons why stick drivers have such a high vote. basically, take the number of votes for "can drive stick" and that's like 50% of ATOT that can drive stick. the rest can't
 
In the UK, driving a manual is standard. I hate to see american sports cars with autos... it should be criminal to have that much power, yet not have proper control over it. You actually get a lower, crappier licence that only allows you to drive an auto if you take your test on an auto over here.

It's not like it's that tricky, anyone with a basic level on intelligence (the amount of intelligence you should have in order to be on the road at all) can pick it up. If not, perhaps these people shouldn't be behind the wheel?

Autos are great for city driving and motorway cruising, but IMO no good for any kind of fun or decent control.
 
I'm not sure I believe the results.. My first car was a 86 bronco 2. That thing was a blast to drive, U-turns really freaked my buddies out 🙂
 
I really wish I owned one....like a small hatchback or something sporty. They're a lot better on gas milage and much easier to maintain in the long-run. Manual trannies have less problems overall.
