Can you deposit a check written to more than one person?

My old landlord finally refunded our deposit months after we all moved out and split ways. The check she sent to my roommate is the full amount of our deposit and has our 3 names on it. Is it possible for my roommate to deposit this check in his account even if it has our names on it?

Worst case we'll all be in the same town around Christmas visiting family, we might have to get together and go to the bank?

Shouldn't be a problem if he can scribble your names to the back of the check.

I once got a check from my insurance company that was made out to me and the auto body shop. All of a sudden I decided that the damage didn't bother me and I wanted the cash so I just signed my name and deposited the check at the ATM. Money was deposited and I never heard a word from the bank about two names on check.

I think that depends on how it is written. If it is made out to <name> AND <name> then all parties need to sign. If it is <name> OR <name>, then 1 person can deposit it.

If all the names aren't on the bank account then all will need to endorse.

It must have been or, since the money would go to either you or the body shop, not both.

weird.....i got a check made out to myself and my brother, from our auto company(we're both on there) and we both signed, but the bank teler wouldn't let me desposit it without him present.....even though we had both signed it
this is annoying since i don't know when we'll ever be together on the same trip to the bank since we rarely see eachother as it is....

Ugh, I guess I'll just meet up with them and go to the bank. Maybe I should tell my roomate to try to squeeze in an "OR" between our names ;)

Can you use the ATM to deposit it?

A simple solution would be for you to deposit the check into his account.

Since anyone can scribble any name on a check that requires 2 or more endorsements, the bank teller did the right thing. Checks (needing 2+ endorsements) deposited in the ATM might not receive the same scrutiny and get thru okay. Might.
