Can you decrease the quality of an image?

I took a picture with my Canon S230 using the large format which is 2048x1536. I'd like to send an email of the picture, but the file is about 700 KB. So is there a way to decrease the quality (and therefore the size) of the picture besides just cropping off the sides? It is in JPEG format.

edit the jpeg compression rate, or shrink it to a different resolution

I'd suggest resizing it to begin with. How many people do you know run screen resolutions of 2048x1536 or higher?

That is what I want to do. I take it in the large format so a print will look better, but if I'm emailing it 800x600 or so will do.

Wow that was easy. You can tell I didn't bother trying to figure this out on my own first. Thanks all.

actually the easiest thing is to get the power toy from microsoft that allows resizing of images via right-click menu

All ya gotta do is resize it and save it as a JPG or GIF.

Pictures I get from my digital camera I have to shrink to about 25% most times beacuse they are huge.

Unless the person you are sending it to wants to print it out, just decrease the image size to something like 800x600. That will decrease the image size substantially.
