Can you copy an audio CD to a hard drive?

Looking at the files on the CD using Windows XP Explorer, they are .cda files 1 kb in size. When I copy them to HD it doesn't copy the data. Can I back up an audio CD to HD or do I have to make a CDR copy? It's not really that I want to listen from my computer, I just don't want to burn CDRs unnecessarily.

Thanks. I assume that ripping using imgburn would make it easier to create an audio CD from the image, so I downloaded and installed it. I'm creating an image of the second of two audio CDs right now. I haven't tried to create an audio CD from an image yet, but it looks like it's a simple matter.

The installation of imgburn asked me if I wanted to make it the default DVD ripper instead of the DVDDecrypter I had installed, and friendly as it looked, I figured it probably a good idea and did so. DVDDecrypter hasn't been supported for years.
