iphone 3g, 2 year contract. decided i don't need the data plan but want to keep using it as a phone.
att rep said some bs about it being possible but i'll get charged for data if i try to access the web which will end up costing more than $30/mo. and wouldn't do it for me.

I do not believe that is possible based on what I was told when I got my iPhone 3G.

When you buy the iphone you buy the plan and in the contract it says you have to keep the data on your plan or else you break the contract. I know someone who's done it but they had hook-ups.

I think he might be out of contract now, but it's not really clear in the OP.

If you ARE in a contract OP, then you have to keep your data plan as that's what you agreed to. There's absolutely no way around it without getting charged a fee of $200-300.

If you're not in a contract, then you should be able to call AT&T and tell them to block all data access. What the rep told you is true, they'll charge you for the data plan once you start using data (people have reported and confirmed this) so you have to tell them to shut it off.
