Can you be a hero for doing your job?

Now I have a lot of respect for Police, Firefighters and Military people......so let's get that out of the way.

Inspired by the Pilot who landed the plane in the river......which was totally bad ass..

Why is he a hero? Why is a firefighter who ran into the WTC on 9/11 a hero?

If you are paid to do it, you aren't a hero.

Discuss.

I think you can still be a hero in those professions, because some of them (pardon the cliche) go above and beyond the call of duty. I mean, to me, it sort of works the same way that military heroes emerge. They are all expected to be out there fighting in the trenches, but some of them do a lot more than others and should be recognized.

A hero is someone who helps others without the expectation of reward, whether it is payment or recognition.

What? I saved someone's data at a corporate office the other day, I didn't have to. I'm a hero.

Did you do it to receive recognition or to brag about it? If so, you're not a hero.

Mackie2k, in saving the data, did you save the person's life, and was your own life at risk? No. Add to this...

He's a hero because he pulled it off and no one died. And it's not something that is a normal duty, crash landings never are, so it's seen as heroic because it was above and beyond the norm and he managed to have no one die.

Pilot who made a good decision which saved a bunch of lives = hero.
Firefighter who helped people get out of a falling building on time = hero.

Pilots who crashed, Firefighters who got crushed, well not so much...

Some people just try harder at doing everything they possibly can in a situation. A pilot with great skill can land a damaged bird anywhere. A fireman that goes into a building ready to collapse and is the first one to do it has risen above what is expected of him.

But a profession like fire fighters tends to be full of more potential heros than any other, because there duty is to not let anyone burn in a building on fire. Many will run through much fire to get to someone.

A hero is anyone whose story can sell more advertising while still being positive and uplifting.

Actually the person said "Wow you saved my life, thanks!!!"

So, I guess I'm a hero. Plus I wasn't expecting reward, I just did it because I'm an amazing person.

Guess I'm a hero.

Doing something legendary in the line of duty does not make you a hero. Pilots are trained, and it is their duty, to do their best to safely land the plane. He couldn't have bailed from the plane and said, "hey, not my job!". What he did was commendable, and certainly took a lot of skill, quick thinking, etc., but it wasn't heroic.

Then by default they cannot be hero's, as their job expectation is for them to live and potentially die in dangerious situations.

A firefighters job is to run into a building and save people. that's not above and beyond the job of a firefighter, that's a core skill.

So you don't think you should get a troll hero award for suggesting that 911 firefighters and paramedics aren't heroes (the word can be pluralized, FYI)? I think you're doing fantastic trolling; I for one recommend you for the Hero Troll award.... 😉

I saw the 60 minutes interview and when asked if he was thinking about the passengers he said no. All he thought about was landing the plane.

He wanted to save his own ass.

You have to learn to accept the exceptions as some jobs are more special than others which makes you more important than others. Flying is an extraordinary job. IT is not. It's THAT simple.

Everyones a Hero in their own way! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yGeroywBuo

I would agree with you if you are trained to do a job and you do it, you aren't a hero. You did your job well.
The hero to me is the engineer who created the lock-down button on the plane that prevented the plane from taking water and sinking. Props to him and his team.

I'm not trolling, I'm just tired of hearing everyone being called a hero. There are true hero's in this world and then just people doing their jobs and something bad happens. It's sad, it's tragic....but I don't think that automatically makes them a hero.

A Real Hero? The people on flight 93.
