Three men went to a motel. The motel manager said a room cost $30, so each man put up $10 and went to their room. A little while later the manager realized the room was only $25, so he sent the bellhop back to the three guys' room with $5. On the way to the room the bellhop couldn't figure out how to split the $5 between the 3 men, so he gave each one of them $1 and he kept the other $2.
This meant that the 3 men paid $9 each for the room for a total of $27. Add the $2 that the bellhop kept = $29.
Where did the other dollar go?

It's all in the wording of the riddle The missing dollar is accounted for if you do the actual math out instead of listening to the story.

Oldest........ riddle..........ever.

I was actually asked this on a freakin job interview one time... passed it with flying colors, but still didn't get the job. Bastids.

its been said many different ways. taxi cab driver, anything. its all in how you do the math correctly deffinately dont follow how the story wants you to.

Now THAT is the key. That makes the most sense when explaining it. It isn't $9 x 3people + $2 b/c that would mean the the motel started with $30 and gave back $29 of it. In reality what happened is that the Room was $25 and the guys paid $27 which included $25 for the room and $2 "tip" for the bellhop. Yay me!
