Can XP Registry be rebuilt?

I am aware that when one ran into serious problems with the registry in Win 95/98, the registry could be rebuilt from DOS commands. I tried these commands with Windows XP and found that they do not work. Is there another way to rebuild the XP registry, or is it a moot point because of XP's design.


Here is my problem. I ran into system hangups after installing some audio compression software. When I uninstalled the software, the hangups and problems still occurred. This lead me to belive that my registry was in someway corrupted by this software. I tried using jv16's registry cleaner with no luck.

Search for RegscrubXP, and run it. It should solve any/all bad registry entries and do a nice cleanup. It also backs up your registry that it touches so you can always restore it if need be.

Very unlikely that anything under the user tree is causing this (most likely something in the hardware tree, which this isn't related to). The earlier suggestion was the best, system restore back to before the problem happened.

Turned that off months ago. . . . Didn't have any luck with it on a prior install. So, I guess the registry cannot be rebuilt?

Not simply, it will be much faster to reinstall and leave SR on this time!

You mean a repair install? I did one on a machine, and it worked quite well. I'll give that a try,

You can always swap out your registry hives from the windows\repair folder. If you want to see what I'm referring to, see this thread I posted in:

The difference for you is that with Windows XP, it's recommended you do all the registry files do to activation issues. If you want to try with just the system/software hive though and risk activation issues, go for it.
