I have a computer with Windows xp and I use it to also plays games. I know that Windows uses resfresh rates of 60 and 75 depending on whether it uses open gl or direct 3d. i am just curious, will this changing of refresh rates to low settings destroy the monitor?

Really depends on how much your monitor can handle, when you only see a certain amount listed when the "hide" box is checked then those are the ones you can use safely. Doesn't mean your monitor can't handle a slighty faster one. It also depends on what program you use to change it, when I change my frame rate using the normal way through right click, settings, advance, monitor. And If put it over 60hz ( for 1280x1024 ) thats how much it can safely handle, but if I put it on lets say 70, it will screw up my picture. But If I use a program called refresh locker (I don't know if it will work on non ati cards, it comes in a 3rd party driver pack) it can go all the way to 160hz without screwing up, but I don't feel safe with that so I put it on 75hz and I haven't had a problem yet.

You might want to get Powerstrip and see if you can change them that way. http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm

Too low of refresh rates could potentially make the monitor coil overheat. But how low are we talking? Honestly, at the distance you'll be sitting, anything less than 60hz could be hazardous to your health. 60Hz should be supported at every resolution by your monitor.

Thanks to all those who replied. I was wondering because two months after I bought the Dell 4400 (Windows xp) deal posted here, my monitor became blurry in the middle of the screen and clear on the left and right sides. So I bought the Nec multisync 95 posted in the hot- deals. The first day of using the monitor it would become blurry for a second then clear up. A week later the monitor became blurry in the middle and right sides of the monitor. I thought it might be drivers so I switched it to my other computer (Windows 98) and it was still blurry. I returned it to staples and it has been been clear for a week. I think that my first monitor broke when I took it out to put in a dvd player. When I took out the vga adapter I heard a pop. Two broken monitors have made paranoid.
