Now, the real question: Who cares what color you are?
Because you can get preferential treatment on college applications if you mark down african american. it is a fact.

I think the govt classifies African American as a race, not an ethnic group. If it was an ethnic group, then anyone from Africa could be an African American.

Technically aren't all people african since man evolved and then migrated out of africa?

Ward Connerly is right, get rid of race classification altogether.

I know some black people who are NOT African American, as well. One is from Trinidad, for instance.

Sweet. I'm from Trinidad.
Sweet, you must be African American, right  ;)

Pics please! We only judge by appearance, since maybe some major tanning happened or some evolution. . . . ;) Hehehe! I'm messing with you.

Really, it depends upon your definition of "African American". If you define "African American" as an ethnicity or race, then no the person you described isn't African-American. If on the other hand you define "African American" as a nationality, the person could be African-American, but not if she's still in South Africa (or Botswana or Zimbabwe or Kenya . . . you name it). ;)
Well, obviously, "African American" can not possibly be an ethnicity or a race because of the diversity of people who live in Africa. (Arabs, Egyptians, Dutch, Negroes)
"African American" can also not ever be classified as a nationality, unless all of Africa were to become one country.

If a group of people prefer that term, I am more than happy to use it, but I believe that any such distinction is influenced more by politics than by any percieved difference in groups.

I know a lot of african americans (or so i would call them) who deny they are african americans, and that only their ancestors were, and now they are what is called "Black"...not just american, but "black"
