This thread will be testing the Westmere-EP E5640 Quad core with Hyper-threading at 4.11ghz.

Specs.

Xeon E5640
8GB memory @ 1586mhz CL10
ASUS P6X58D-E
Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro OC+ 4GB HBM
Silverstone Strider SST1000-P
500GB Hitachi Deskstar
1000GB Samsung Spinpoint F3
Windows 10 x64 Pro

GPU will be left stock (though it's factory OC is much higher than normal Fury's)
Resolution will be 1920x1080.

Misc info.
Mouse runs at 1000hz poll rate, may cause some CPU overhead... but doubtful.

Will be back with results!

A fury pro card is no longer high end - it has mostly mid range performance. A 1070 is faster. A 1080 is significantly faster. A 1080ti is massively faster.

Generally it's the minimum frame times that x58 stuff struggles with now. A Skylake (kabylake) clocked at 4.7Ghz+ will have massively better minimum frame rates, which makes all the difference in gaming.

Does that CPU support 3 channel ram? The pic of the MoBo shows 6 ram sockets with only 2 dimms installed and your Asus motherboard says:
"This motherboard supports the latest Intel® Core™ i7 processors in LGA1366 package with integrated memory controller to support 3-channel (6 DIMMs) DDR3 memory.
Just curious , if it does it would be a better test to add a third Dimm.

Interesting.

That's not interesting at all. What's interesting is you claiming a Fury pro is a high end card in 2017. It's now a midrange card.

High end = Vega, 1080
Ultra high end = TitanX (pascal), 1080ti, TitanXp

Here's a non cherry picked benchmark - 1440P, DX12 and a AMD sponsored game, so Fiji is a pretty much best case scenario result here:

It's known that it makes no difference for gaming, but lower latency and higher mhz make a difference, i might buy a better kit.. but prices for Ram are way too high right now.

The XEON in my experience games like a Haswell 4690K in games that don't use hyperthreading, and like a 6600K when they do.

GTA V turned in an average of 80 FPS with a minimum of 39 FPS and a max of 122, this was with teh extended graphics options enabled, no MSAA same settings as in the video above.

Considering that guy was benching his without the extended graphics i feel it did very well.

I can bench CSGO very shortly.. since that's a game that relies heavily on single core performance, so that will show Westmere-EP's biggest weakness vs the later intel chips... or will it?

Yeah it's high end... i don't think you know what prices are like do you? mid range cards don't cost 260+ i paid 260 GBP for this on Ebay, a 1070 is over 400, an RX 580 which is slower is 320+.

We are not paying mid range prices, we have not paid mid range prices for a very long time, and until we do it's a high end card.

The Fury is a monster still for 1080P users, i would say more so than the GTX 1060 and RX 580 so long as the 4GB of HBM is not a limitation.

You do realize that a) things depreciate and b) the price/performance curve is dynamic and changes over time, even within a single generation, right? Dave2150 is right - by August 2017 standards for everybody other than yourself, that card is solidly midrange.

If by some miracle the rest of the Vega stack turns out to be much, much better than initial RX Vega results would indicate, it's entirely possible that we could even be calling it a low end card a month from now even though technically, nothing has changed.

So if I find a card that's a monster at 720p is it suddenly high end?

There are always GPU's better than the single one in your system, at 1080P my card is high end.. it maxes out everything with great FPS so far..

My RX 580 get's boned by it in games like DOOM, GTA V and BF4.

Must have forgot 1920x1080 is the most common res on PC, i would tell you much differently if i were at 1440P or 4K.

I think the issue here is how you're defining high end. You're using your own arbitrary performance metric of what is and isn't high end at a specific resolution. While msot people use the word "high end" to describe cards that are actually top performers. Since there are several cards out now that outperform yours by a significant margin, I guess you would define those as "higher" and "highest" end?

Indeed westmere xeons are still a great option if you have the motherboard to support them.

A note, the video of DOOM was done using the AMD GPU to record.
I will be uploading another using the XEON CPU.

Now with this the maximum benchmark FPS (the recorder has a benchmark feature) 78.2 FPS is the maximum my main HDD can deliver.
The secondary however is able to do 99.5 FPS, so that was used.

DOOM was capped to 80FPS in order to not thrash the HDD.

So i used a different video editor for this as i accidentally recorded to .MKV and Sony Vegas does not like it.
So this was done using HitFilm Express.

Downside, choppy video playback after render (Vegas sorts this out automatically, hence the Vegas video above is FAR smoother on playback).
Inferior audio render.

But this video editor is free, i paid for Vegas.

Westmere Xeons and Phenoms X6 are still living even more than expecting... While the first one can support up to Mid High end card (R9 Fury and GTX 1070) while the 2nd one still can resist a R9 Fury Nano with no OC or even a GTX 1070 non OC if the CPU gets OCed at 4.0/4.2 Ghz.

Those chips deserve a medal. They are real survivors of the time.

The worst is when you upgrade your platform, for gaming, and your new one doesn't make a difference. That really hit me hard when I went from a York-field top end to Bloomfield. That's was the proof I needed that the internal system workings needed more attention with tweaking.

Deus Ex in DX12 mode was kind of inconclusive because it's so GPU heavy, 60FPS solid V-sync.

Also some news.. my cooler is now a CoolerMaster Seidon 240V which BARELY let's my Fury fit in the damned case :D

GPU temps don't exceed 58c now because the fans are now pushing air through the radiator and out of the case so it's acting as a ventilator for the GPU too.

And i will be able to push this chip much further now.. i was using a Noctua ITX cooler before that's said to be not recommended for overclocking... LOL
