How did it come to this? How was this tumor allowed to grow to 16lbs before acting? Why not 1lb? or 5lbs? How could they let it grow for this long?

I wondered that too, so I went to a couple med/health sites. This disease actually replaces developing bone with fibrous tumors and lesions. The skull and facial bones are usually the most affected, but at the satrt are only evidenced as pain and headache type symptoms. Apparently, the tumors spread very quickly. In the facial area where the bones are thinner, the effects of the lack of bone and the swelling of the fibrous tumors become more pronounced more rapidly. It also appears that the disease causes the affected skin and organ areas to grow more rapidly than unaffected parts, hence the swelling of her face.
EDIT: So that's why they're doing the surgery at 16 lbs, it may have all rapidly grown to that size and then 'stabilized' at that weight.

At least that's my interpretation of all the medical jargon I came across at WebMD, eMedicine, etc.
 
Why isn't this showing on the front page? We have enough posts to be in the bottom 5 of the 'Hot Topics' section.

Casseus' case received global media attention, motivating thousands of people from across the globe to donate to the International Kids Fund which is sponsoring her medical care at the public hospital, part of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center.

I agree with this completely. Its like one of use telling our grandparents we can't help them with their PC until they give us there life savings. So ridiculous. I bet the doctors feel good that they are willing to do the operation...just not willing to do it for free. I was never a fan of just how much doctors make. My sister once had a wart removed and it cost $220 for 5 minutes work. Lucky insureance covered most of it. Still upsets me
