On a more serious note...
It has now become socially acceptible to bash fat people and realize the healthcare implications.
We knew this would be next after smoking and it is coming to fruition.
No need to "bash" fat people, but I don't think the fact that being overweight is becoming less acceptable is a bad thing...
Totally agree with that statement Pablo. Although, I do not neccessarily believe it is becoming socially acceptable to bash fat people. The only thing that even indicates that is the fact that the government is finally getting wise and letting it be known that the American public should eat more healthily. Something that should have been done a long time ago. At the same time, I here more and more excuses about being fat.
I was in a social problems class this last semester. This topic came up one day in class. Now keep in mind the demographic was probably split between middle aged women (25-40 maybe?) and 18-22 year old students. (Community college, if anyone is interested.
As you could imagine, most of the younger people in the class are quiet, with the exception of a few. Myself being one of the few. Most of the middle aged women (a majority of which were overweight and lacked intelligence, to put it bluntly) defended being overweight and made all kinds of excuses for it. These excuses ranged from it being genetic, to not having time.
Now I realize that some people have 3 kids and work 2 jobs etc... but that is still not an excuse. No matter how busy you are, Im sure you can find 15-20 minutes a day to go outside and excercise, if not a lot more. The whole genetic argument is total BS, and doesn't even deserve a rebuttal.
Despite my best efforts, I could not convince the defenders of the 'fat epidemic' to see the light, but I didn't expect to. The whole point of me posting this story is that it is the main reason many people despise or are aggravated with obese people. I don't HATE someone because they are overweight, but I do get annoyed by them. And I also think they are full of sh!t when they make up excuses for their inadequacies (sp?). At that point I begin to lose respect for them (read: still not hate).
It has been my experience that many overweight people are simply lazy, and will look towards a billion other 'causes' to blame this on, rather than themselves.
