Can Video card w/ max resolution 1600x1200 run on widescreen?

Can Video card w/ max resolution 1600x1200 run on widescreen? maybe 1440x900?
what would be the draw back? what would be the optimum resolution i could run this video card on widescreen?

resolution is determined by ur monitor not ur video card. as long as u have the latest drivers it should be able to do anything u want. if ur monitor supports 1440x900, sure.
 
so even if the card spec says max resolution 1600x1200 i can still run 1920x1200 monitor such as dell 2407wfp?

Which video card are you talking about? It'd have to be pretty old to only claim 1600x1200 as a max supported res.

As vgk states, drivers are the main issue here. They determine which resolutions your card can output (and may even allow options that your monitor cannot normally display). Very old video card were also limited by their frame buffer size (a 4MB card can't handle many pixels at standard 32-bit color!).
 
i'm talking about ati firemv 2400 256mb quad output.
on the website, it says that max resolution per output is 1600x1200.
initially i thought that i could only use non widescreen monitors because of the 1600x1200.

Mobility X600, I can't fathom why it would be able to support the resolution you want.
 
It's probably the desktop equivalent of the firemv 2400, workstation cards are just modified desktop cards. FireMV is old though, so probably that was the highest rez at the time.

BlueAcolyte is right, when I talk about the Mobility X600 (M24) I'm talking about the fact that the FireMV 2400 is really just a repackaged X600. That chip is circa-2004, so it's basically still a modern chip.

Which leads me to the point (and I was in a hurry so I errored here earlier) that your card should support the full range of resolutions, at least with DVI. I can't fathom why it would not be able to run 1920x1200 any below.
