Can Ubuntu 9.10 beat Mac OSX 10.6?

True.

Also I hope after 9.10 is finished the numbers further improve. Im gonna install the new alpha 5, coming out tomorrow, as soon as a iget a chance. I had alpha 4 on laptop and it ran really well when it wasnt having issues. It has intel graphics so 9.10 will be much improved on 9.04.

True, they should be basing their decision on the dozens of other advantages Linux has over OS X =)

no kidding. my bro has an old imac because he wanted os x for audio work. ive tried time and time again to get him to just try linux, and all he wants is a different, used mac tower *Shrug*

youd have to pay me to own a mac, and even then id put linux on it.

Well if the audio apps for Linux were better I might agree but in that case Windows or OS X is probably better for that particular function. Although if it were me I'd probably have a Windows/OS X machine for that and a Linux machine for everything else.

I did just that when my boss gave me a Mac Pro at work.

I miss playing with Linux. I've made up my mind this week to sell Macbook and buy a cheap laptop to install linux on it.

Why not just put Linux on your MacBook?

Yep, I knew a few people back at my previous university that purchased Apple hardware only to install Ubuntu on it immediately.

Once wireless-N is more mature on linux notebooks I'll probably find myself moving back as well. I keep OSX on my notebook because all the hardware works.

kinda seems silly, id sooner spend that kind of money on a thinkpad but *shrug* whatever. did they dual boot or just wipe it and install linux?

I work with 100s of ppl. Most of them have computers, but the only other person (I know of) that runs Linux is an uber-brilliant, highly accredited electrical engineer and Microsoft MVP, with several master's degrees under his belt - an ardently vocal Vista-hater, BTW... no kidding!

I know 3 Mac users. One of them has spent $1000s maintaining his MacBook. He travels a LOT - several days a week. Something is always breaking (probably due to rough handling), and he just takes it to the $hop and has it fixed. When I've asked him why he puts up with it, he said the MacBook is a good ice-breaker, e.g. conversation piece. When he's in a meeting, he's the only guy at the table with an Apple, and everyone asks him about it. Whatever! I guess he's an unrepentant attention seeker. He's on a budget, so it doesn't come out of his pocket...

Another Mac user is a former Amiga fanboi that longs for the good old days of computing - in his case, the 80s. He says Macs are close enough...

The other one is gay and has a long-term, live-in relationship with a 4-star pastry chef. Let's not go there...

The other day, I heard that one of my work acquaintances bought a Dell Mini with Linux. I thought, "Cool! I got someone I can share Linux Netbook stories with now." No such luck! When I hooked up with him, he said he's going to wipe the drive and install XP. I looked at him in shock and disbelief. I wonder if it showed. I didn't even bother asking what version of Linux was installed. I figured, "What's the use?" After all, the Bible warns us about casting your pearls before swine, yes?

I just don't get it! :(

Um...

What was the topic? :D

There's some good audio apps for linux, it's probably one of the most full-featured set of apps available for linux.

Oh, and to the original topic, the 9.10 alphas are not ready for prime time yet. I've got the latest on my laptop and it's faster, but apps/services randomly crash, not all programs work correctly (sometimes as simple as missing items, sometimes shortcuts not working) and in general, ubuntu seems to wait until final releases before even bothering with polishing up the release. My wireless requires me to load the drivers upon every boot, whereas it just worked in 9.04.

For personal use I'm sticking to Macs. Since Reason doesn't exist on Linux I probably will never switch to *nix for day to day use. I plan on building a Debian file server though. I just don't get why you guys are so anti-mac. I know plenty of networking *nix people at work that love using Macbooks and OS X. Seems to do well with working with Linux servers.

I guess these numbers are impressive if I'm gonna be compiling til my eyes turn blue. Forget about user experience.

VinDSL lol at generalizations that Mac users are idiots.

I remember seeing some articles about apps like rosegarden which looked professional to me, but I can't really say. I was mainly thinking of something like Garageband, but I guess it depeneds on what you're looking for.

I've talked to a few guys like that I can't get why they're so pro-Mac. I've used one a bit and the UI is just annoying, X apps are treated like redhead step children and there's no package management. If I ever got myself a Mac it would have Debian on it the same day.

Which is fine, I just don't get why every *nix user has to down play OS X like it's a abomination.

Well as an OS IMO it doesn't deserve any more than a 'meh' and lots of cases a huge WTF. I think my main problem is with Apple and their "OMG it's a 64-bit UNIX workstation so it's so powerful and yet so easy!!!" advertising. At the time they started that the only thing 64-bit was the kernel and a few pieces of the core OS, you couldn't even run 64-bit binaries at that point. And while it's technically unix, the half-hearted attempt to let people run X apps via a tacked on X server that isn't integratrated at all is pretty gay.

I honestly don't see the whole X server thing as a big deal. 95% of the apps I used on linux have a osx version or equivalent. I use the X server mostly for running remote applications (such as netbackup admin). It works great and is at least way better then any windows/X solution I've tried.

I was just swapping some campfire stories...

God's truth -- I barely give Apple (et al) a second thought! I don't like Macs and I don't hate them. I don't know anything about them...

Here's another one for you: Two years ago, I was thinking about buying a Mac. If I was "anti-mac" I wouldn't have even considered one, but the dock had me hooked! I was seriously looking for a good deal, when I found out that Stardock gives a clone away for free...

http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/ (Stardock ObjectDock web page)

Dittos for Linux...

http://wiki.awn-project.org/ (Avant Window Navigator aka AWN Wiki page)

Sooo...

Until Apple comes up with a killer app that others don't give away for free, I'll stick with Linux (and you-know-who).

Nothing personal - just saying... :D

I'm going to wait till U9.10 is "finished" before even trying it, since it's going to my HTPC, which isn't ready yet, either. Now I have a ton of experience with almost every Windows OS's as well as a few different Linux-distros and some experience with OS X (yes I got a MacBook Pro - got it from work - and I'm not going to install any other OS on it. Why? This is the only way to prove, that I have tested it, since I got dozens of friends, who use Mac and each time I say why, they say try it - you'll love it. Now they can't do that.)
I got 3 Windows -machines (Vista, XP, 7), 1 Linux-laptor (with Ubuntu 9.04 currently installed), 1 Apple and 3 other machines (haven't decided which OS to install. Here I take suggestions, if anyone has any.)

So, I'll repeat, if anyone has any nice suggestions for an OS for my 3 non-OS -machines, please say so. Any will do, if you think it'll be worth trying on. (But rather not (K/X/N)Ubuntu's nor Red Hat)
