Can u run a 6800 Ultra & 6800 GT in SLi ?

Hi ,

Can u run a 6800 Ultra & 6800 GT in SLi ?

or a 6800 Ultra and a 7600/7800 GT in SLi ?

What are the basic rules for running 2 cards together ?

i have never tried this idea myself. but i remember reading this back when sli came back

AFAIK, the driver won't allow you to if they don't have the same model string. This is regardless of the actual GPU on the card. By the same token, you can't SLI an 8800GTX and an 8800Ultra even though they are both G80 chips and only differ by clockspeed. However, you can SLI a stock and an Overclocked version of the same model of card without issue.

sell it and buy an 8800GS. You'll come out even or even save money compared to buying another 6800. The 8800GS will be faster than a pair of 6800s.

Im on a really tight budget and only have about £80-£90 / $160-$180 to spend .

9600GT

Hopefully the rest of your system is not as out of date, but 9600GT should be best bang for buck

I think i'll proberly get the 9600GT ive see a few good reviews for that card .

BTW - How does the 8800GS Compare ? I have enough to buy one just now but id have to wait a few weeks to get a 9600GT there about £100-£130.

PS - The system im buying the card for has LanParty SLI-DR Motherboard - AMD X2 4800+ - 2 X 1GB OCZ PC4000

If you're gaming at 1440x900 or less, the 8800GS performs just as well as the 9600GT. Overclock it and it can beat the 9600GT in resolutions 1440x900 or less.

I usually play at around 1280 x 1024 in most games .

Im not a hardcore gamer , i dont bother with AA or AF i prefer reasonable image quality with good Framerates .

Higher resolutions too. Just not with AA in high resolutions that's where the 9600gt bandwidth comes into play.

This does not make any sense.

In any case you would want a 9600GT, 8800GS, HD3870, or something else along those lines.

you CAN flash a 6800 Ultra into a 6800 GT, but i dont know if thatll allow sli.

you cant flash a GT into an Ultra and you wouldnt want to even if you could.

That should trick the driver into giving you the option, though I don't know if it will actually function correctly in SLI.

ditto, flashing should make it work ..they both are exactly same NV40 chips

It makes sense with a 6800 Ultra ... I seldom used AA with my 6800GT because it took a much greater toll on performance with older GPU's. (AF wasn't a big problem though)

Note however that at 1280x1024 you'll be able to use full AA/AF and pretty much every other IQ feature available in most games with either an 8800GS or 9600GT & still maintain reasonable frame-rates.

SLI is the only factor here.

a 6800GT bios on a 6800Ultra is an old trick for much better performance from an Ultra. i should know cause im the guy that worked on it so that part is not an issue.

its just the sli part that is unknown, but im very curious if it can work!

device id string is on flash that is flashed by bios, there's no reason why it won't work.
