Can turning a TV off and On repeatedly damage it?

My little boy (17 months) has learned to turn our TV on and off and now does so repeatedly. Its an older CRT type tv if it mattes. I've tried shooing him away but he keeps wanting to go back.

Yep, especially all those on/off contacts in keyboards.

Are you positive on this? I've heard it in the past and always wondered if it was true, google came up empty.

Thanks, I was kind of hoping you would chime in on this one. Now for the real challenge, finding a way to keep certain little fingers from pressing the button on and off

Not to mention the flux capacitor and the barion transmorgrifier.

No button, no problem! Just rip it off. ;) You could always hook an electrical lead up to give him a little jolt. Nothing like a little psychological conditioning. :D

Any way you could raise the TV higher from the ground? Taller stand? Put some cheap concrete bricks under the current stand to raise it up?

Good luck!

It doesn't do the thermionic cathode any good either. Unlike the deguass thermistor, this one is critical to the operation of the set, and irreplaceable.

Hmm, the tachyon generator gets a lot of wear from the on-off cycle too. Maybe you should just keep it off.

Well that really depends on how long he waits between cycles. ;)

Well, thanks to Rubycon for the real info and thanks to the rest for typical ATOT shenanigans, these type of shenanigans are what keep ATOT the best place to be, so thumbs up to your shenanigans

My daughter was doing this at about the same age.
I remembered that there was an option in the menu to turn off the front panel controls, so Thank God for that!

Maybe the CCFL backlight cycling on and off isn't a good thing? Probably not an issue with LED backlights.

It starts with the TV remote, then comes the gas range, then comes theft at the grocery store, and finally murder by stabbing. You better train that boy to quit messing w/ shit or you're gonna be in a shit load of headaches.

Maybe... My 10+ year old Sanyo CRT has been turned on and off repeatedly by me. The CRT tubes or speaker makes a really annoying whine that goes away if you hit the floor, change the channel or turn it on and off. Sometimes it stays no matter what, so during these 'sometimes', I get pissed and start mashing the power button. It's still working...

I heard changing channels breaks TVs too. No problem there either.

Best idea yet. Or plug it into a power strip and turn it off at the power strip when not in use.
