Can Tivo series 1 be used without subscription?

Just wondering for all you who have experience with Tivo series 1. I heard they can be used without subscribing if you just use them as a digital vcr. If any of you know what features can be used without subscribing, post 'em here, I'd appreciate it as I"m looking to buy! Thanks!

You should be able to manually schedule recordings. Ofcourse things like tv listings will not work. When my listings get old nag screens pop up saying, "X days left. Please make a daily call" so you might get messages telling you do subscribe/call.

I have never let my subscription run out so I'm 100% not sure.
