You assume correctly, and a common async scenario would be this. Person has system running pc2100, gets a stick of pc2700 because it's on sale, the pc2700 can only run as fast as the slowest ram, so in essence, you are limited by your slowest stick of ram, get the pc2100 and be done with it.

well, i was planning on taking out the 256mb of pc2100 and putting a fresh stick of 512 mb pc2700 in slot 1 , is that an option?, it would be running async to the cpu though...

I'm running the demo on:

2000+
ATI AIW 9000 Pro
512 of PC3200

Running at 1280x1024 with everything turned on on my LCD is awesome!

I'm wondering if the duallie in my sig would be good enough for a lan game... Since UT2k4 isn't multithreaded I won't get the punch of both CPUs, but I'm hoping it would cut the mustard for some nice team dm or possibly onslaught. :D

Ut2k3 is actually somewhat multithreaded actually. The sound runs in a seperate thread for what its worth.

Hmm... it doesn't seem to take advantage of HT then. I occasionally will see cpu usage go above 50% on my P4, but I attribute that to another program jumping in for a few cycles.

I'd imagine a dedicated server doesn't use sound (or at least not much).

Well like I said, it's only the sound code and thats on HT system, not a true SMP rig, so whatever performance improvements due to increased parallelism you would get would be reduced even further. I haven't really run UT2k3 on a single CPU rig much, and my dualie rig isn't a great test as it has plenty of horsepower for that game.

I have a Radeon 9600XT, 512 MB of RAM, and a P4 2.4. I run the game at 1280x1024 with all settings the highest they can go. I also run with 4xAA and 8xAF. I've been in games with tons of people and even when alot of action is happening it always runs smooth. No slowdown yet!

exactly! I know so many people using 9800Pro or FX5950s with a 17" CRT.. or one person I saw using a 9800pro with a 15" HP CRT.. ghettoness. That was his main monitor too!

Really? I find that hard to digest. I have a Radeon 9600XT running at 500/728 with Athlon XP 2500+ oc to 2370 Mhz. I run UT2004 at 1280x1024 with everything on highest settings and in Onslaught with 31 bots and I average around 35 FPS. Pull down the console and type "stat fps" and see what you average around. Smooth as butter to you may mean 15 fps.
