Any board with an ethernet port can work as a server. What is the CPU you plan to mate with? Bad Axe 2 is a LGA775 board and it supports the first generation Core 2 CPUs including Xeon variants. It's got an excellent network throughput (gigabit of course) so it meets the first criterion. One drawback I can think of is that the 975X supports only 4 SATA disks natively, so that could be a limiting factor. It does have 4 more SATA ports rooted in Marvell controller, though. (making up total 8 ports) The board is one of my favorites among all Intel boards that I've tried. Very very stable.
