I would ignore the advice in this thread and consult a lawyer if you are serious about keeping the name.

I can tell for a fact you can't extort money from companies for domain names anymore, courts almost always side with the company especially if they are a large well known trademarked company. Secondly it would be very very stupid to email them demanding a large some of money for the domain name, I believe it is now illegal to do this.

I'd say contact them, let them know that you have a legit reason for the domain, and a positive one at that. You have no intention of defaming them, nor saying anything negative, but that you want to have a site about their cars (for whatever reason). Let them know that you're not squatting and you'd like to retain the domain, it's certainly possible they'll let you, or offer you a few hundred bucks for it and you can pick a new domain, after discussing it with them.

As long as you aren't trying to sell the domain to them... (Cybersquating) or selling something that would in some way hurt their sales, it doesn't matter.

I own TheSimsTwo.com I talked/called maxis/ EA's Legal Department about it, and they told me that those two reasons above are the only way that they could take legal action and get the domain.

Although EA/Maxis does own Thesimsthree.com and so on now.

You can put what ever you want on the site as long as it is not selling something that would hurt thier business. I'm pretty sure you can make a site saying why the cars are bad... (paypalsucks.com)

What is the definition of "large some(sic) of money"?

I am not the one approaching them to buy the domain and that is/was never my intention.

I wonder if there is a way to just cancel ownership of the domain so that you don't have to deal with the 'lawyers'.

Actually, that's not exactly true.

If you have registered the domain name "in bad faith" (that is, if you are indeed using it to "divert Internet traffic away" from the other party's website), then they can appeal to ICANN to take the domain name from you. (I *think* it's ICANN anyway.)

As far as the court system is concerned, in the U.S. anyone can sue anyone for anything. Whether or not they'll win, or force you to spend more money than you have defending yourself, is another matter.

Edit: just saw links to the ACPA FAQ, that looks like the best resource to use.

Shouldn't you receive a certified letter in the mail if they were for real? I wouldn't give over a domain name from an email I received.

I wonder if I turn the domain over to them should I ask $10, $50, $100?

There is alot of misinformation in the thread. In the case your talking about, yes they can make you give up control of the domain (translation, the registar will be ordered to transfer control). The Nissan case is interesting, but doesn't apply here.

Also, (unless I missed the joke too) is Madonna not MaDDonna so I don't see the point...

Right now it is parked on sedo to get click-through revenue until the site opens, which should be about 3 more weeks.

The site will have information and pictures about Chevrolet cars.

I am not defaming Chevrolet in the site.

It is not pron.

Only read half of the first page, but i say just offer a link to the Chevy homepage and put that on your homepage, "to visit the official chevy site, click here" type thing. rembmer Nissan.com though, the guys name was something nissan, and the care company said he was squatting, even though he ran his own computer business off of the site, which isn't even related to cars.
