Can the viewing angle be adjusted on laptop displays?

A guy I work with has an older Toshiba laptop. He fired it up recently and the viewing angle on the display is completely wacked. He has to tip the screen back almost flat to be able to see what's on the screen.

Is there some adjustment that can be made? I know even small LCD displays on digital audio gear I've used has had adjustments for viewing angle.

I haven't personally seen this laptop or read through the manual but he says there is absolutely no reference to a viewing angle adjustment. I was unable to find anything on Toshiba's site either.

Nope. Viewing angle is a fixed properrty of the LCD used in laptop displays.

If the screen has to be tipped all the way back flat, then the screen is basically stuffed.

The only things that you can adjust are colour and contrast (not always available).

If it's an older machine, it probably has an HPA display, which are known for havin a limited display angle to begin with. If the display is shot, and it is an older machine, it would probably be just as cost efficent to buy a new lappy.

Stonecold3169 was on to something with the HPA. Most likely, he has a passive matrix LCD and simply needs to adjust the contrast which you will find on the right hand side of the LCD (closer to the hinges than to the top of the LCD).
