Can the United States function without the U.N.?

yes
the UN is a waste of crap

the UN is so craptastic, that when the UN takes a crap, it creates a infinity black hole of doom

Can the US benefit from a strong UN is the question. Of course.

However the current US govt administration doesn't feel it needs anyone so why the fvck would they think they need the UN.

Only the last half of your last sentence makes sense.

The US has no need for the UN. If the President wants to work with a corrupt of group of nincompoops who are supposed to represent their people but instead feed at the trough with other people's money, he should simply set up office on Capital Hill instead. It's much closer.

You just described every government in existence😕

Of course the UN can function without the UN, as can every other country on this planet. The UN doesn't exist for the benefit of the United States. It serves a necessary purpose. Its flaw is that it tends to lack a spine, but I think the world would be worse off without the UN.

The Gulf War and the No Fly Zone among other things would not have been nearly as successful without the UN. When we don't like what they say, we do it anyway. No harm done.

The UN should develop a nuclear weapons program. Then maybe Georgie would take it more seriously.

A better idea is for the US to withdraw from the UN, kick their headquarters out of the US, and hold all of the diplomats in prison until they pay their parking fines.

The UN is the closest thing we have to a legitimate international forum for all issues. Of course it has its flaws, but it has done this world much good.

I'm afraid the bigger problem is the nature of international diplomacy. It is slow, slow and gutless.

The most powerful Nations on Earth don't need the UN.. but the weaker ones do mainly to protect them from the more powerful ones. Ironic that of the 'big five' only one scoffs at the UN when it seeks to do what its charter mandates.... The spine of the UN are the members not some entity from Mars. We are the UN! Russia is and so are the rest... the UN is US!

Threads like this always makes me a little depressed and gives me hope at the same time. Depressed to see people with no clue attacking it without knowing what they are talking about. Hopeful when I realize the same people are just powerless posters whose opinion won't change anything.

Shouldn't the question be the other way around?

"Can the UN function without the US?" is a much more accurate query. I mean, we do what we do in spite of the UN. They can't do anything without our money and military.

Seems some people do not understand how the UN has worked out greatly for our foreign policy. How our manipulation and lobbying via the UN has benefited this country greatly in economic and military areas. Where else would you go to get a binding treaty with every country in the world via a single vote ? Good luck on holding other nations to these former UN binding treaties or negotiating with a few hundred countries 1 by 1 if we go it alone. If we are going to throw a tantrum and stomp our feet because **gasp** not every country wants to be used to benefit our interests well it wont get easier going it alone. We would also be giving up to much power to France, Germany, China and Russia who would want nothing more then to see us leave the UN.
