Can the Toshiba L25-S1193 laptop be upgraded from a Celeron M to a Pentium M?

If yes, can Speedstep be activated?

Thanks.

The L25-S1193 uses the RS480 chipset, which does support Pentium M's. Speedstep will work fine.

However I'm not sure which chip you will need, 400MHz FSB or 533; 'cuz the Toshibas use DDR2. I would imagine the 533MHz FSB chip, but a 400 might work too.

The S1193 uses DDR2 533 memory.

EDIT: Holy Moses, Newegg has only one for over 3 bills! Gonna be a while. They don't even have a Celeron M w/ 533 fsb.
EDIT2: Uhh, the laptop in question lists a cpu with a 400MHz fsb.

I just phoned Toshiba tech support and they claim the cpu is unremoveable.

Ok...

1) The chipset supports both Celeron and PentiumM processors.
2) I haven't seen a non-removable processor in that form factor in years, I'd break it open to make sure
3) Celeron's do not come in 533mhz FSB
4) PentiumM processors are expensive. Period.
5) You may want to read this thread on pin-modding 400mhz fsb processors and see if you're daring:

Wrong chipset on the mod; it requires the 915, or so the article from the link says.

It will work on any chipset that supports PentiumM 533mhz FSB.

I don't know if they cover the more technical details but wether or not thr processor is a 533mhz or 400mhz depends solely on if a pin is shorted or not on the processor. The chipset has nothing to do with it, other than if it can even do 533mhz FSB or not.

You could pinmod your Celeron to run at 533mhz, which would give you a nice speed boost without having to pay for a new processor, but you will not get speedstep that way.

Just in case anyone is still wondering. This laptop can be modded to 2.0GHz/533MHz bus. I did it last night and it works great. Ran prime95 for about 8 hrs with no probs. The socket is 479 NOT 478 so make sure you are looking at the right diagram. Also, you have to completely dissasemble the beast to get to the processor. Took me forever to figure it out since no repair manuals are availible for download.

First, welcome to the forums.

I suppose to do that mod you were able to remove the Celly from its socket? That would mean that Toshiba's tech support lied to me. Can you replace the Celeron with a Pentium?

Any idea how to get the optical drive out of it? I have the L25-S119 and cannot figure out how to get the optical drive out...haven't tried taking the entire thing apart yet though.

bumpkus - thanks for the welcome! Yes, the cely comes out of the socket. Its a socket mPGA479M. To release the cpu you have to turn a screw on the socket and out it comes. I do not know 100% if you can swap a pentium m into it, but theoretically you should. The chipset supports it, it has ddr2-533 ram, and the pentium m is availible in socket 479.

Personally, i dont see any reason too unless you just have one laying around already. The only thing adding a pentium m would add is 1mb cache > 2mb cache and speed step. That really worth 200 extra dollars?

If you have the base of the laptop facing you (as if you were typing on it) the optical drive will be on the right side. There is a screw on the top left just above the drive. Remove that screw and it should pull out.

To get this far, you have to remove the LCD, wireless antenna, and top cover. I do no recall if this screw can be accessed without removing the top cover. If it can, all you have to do is remove the keyboard.

Hope that helps.

So how is your Celly 1.5 @ 2.0 doing? Significant enough of a increase to justofy all the taking apart for the mod?

Its doing great! For me the mod was totaly worth it! For a $450 laptop, it runs beautifully now. The extra 500MHz and higher FSB speed makes a noticible difference.

If you are considering the mod just remember that once those screws start coming out your warantee is out the window =) If you break it its broken...period.

I will surmise from the $450 price that you got one of the CC Black Friday deals.
If that's the case you probably have a 4 cell battery. How much battery life do you lose with your overclock?

I will admit, the battery is the weakest link (4 cell). It depends heavily on how bright the display is set. When unplugged i turn the brightness all the way down. Before the mod, i was getting right at 1.5 hrs.

I haven't really had an opportunity to test it post-mod. I'll unplug and test it out a little today and get back to you on that one. I'm gonna ballpark 1.25 hrs. Let's see how far off i actually am =)

Too bad battery upgrades are so expensive. $100+ for the 8 cell upgrade.

I imagine that most peeps buying these lappies expect to live on a tight leash. Still, I wish I was able to snag one. I would use like a portable desktop for mobile tech support and using on my recliner, just for reading articles during TV commercials.

I lost a little bit of battery when I did my Pm 1.6 to 2.13... It was noticeable, that along with me being unable to undervolt it very much made me decide to get a 1.73 and just run it at that speed with undervolting. The additional heat and loss of battery life was noticeable.

from ~1:30 to 1:10. Not too bad. Since the mod doesnt have to overvolt the processor to up the clock this is to be expected I guess. I can take a 20 minute hit for a ~25% performance boost.

Any of you guys know a tool that will adjust the voltage on the ati xpress chipsets?

is there any reason to put a P-M in there? If the mobo and everything else isn't Centrino is it really going to give you that much more battery life?

Hi, i looked around the forums and on googles but i couldn't find any information on pin modding the celeron m 370 thats on the toshiba, could you point me to the guide you used to pin mod the laptop or explain to me how you did it? thank you very much in advance.
