Can the GT86 drift?

i'm starting to hate myself for liking the BRZ more and more. that video makes it look like a blast to drive. if subaru would release a turbo version it would sell like hotcakes.

it would definitely be nice to have the extra power of a turbo too. i'm not asking for much, just 300 hp and 250 ft/lbs of torque. well, maybe i am asking for too much. but this car shouldn't jump into the HP Wars foray.

the other sentiments express here, "it will be the new 'it's got v-tech, yo' crowd", i agree with. i expect that there will be lots of thrashed scions on the market and many boy racers thinking that this is the best car since the RSX-S.

I think 260 would be sufficient given the light weight.

Well, since my first and current car is a Camry, I guess by this logic...I will be just like you.

Hmm...

1) Depends how high the douchebag factor is in your area.

2) Recent generation Camry's are no slouch, they aren't the "I can get out and push faster" cars of the 90s.

Well, I live in Mid Florida. 80% of my high school friends and most of my co-workers all have either A) lifted trucks or other utility vehicles or B) a sporty-ish car. Mustangs, Kompresser era Merc's, older M series BMW's, or the standard versions of their parents previous model year german cars, etc (The odd GTI/GLI, MS3, 350s, etc). The rest of them drove everyday normal cars that in my opinion, were exponentially better than my pale white 1999 Camry. ;_;

Can't wait to test drive one of these. Even with its lack of power, which is probably safer for me, considering my foot doesn't know how to lightly use a gas pedal.

If you want to drift, get 200sx + $5k worth of engine goodies. The GT86 could be a great car eventually, if drop-in engine replacements can be done relatively easily. Otherwise, modding this engine will be very tough.

Finding a Silvia in good shape is impossible

Especially in the rust belt. Have you guys noticed the prices of JDM sr20s has gone up as well?

If I ever find a 93 or 94 LE with leather clean no rust I would bite in a heartbeat.

I think I have one more 240 swap in me.

Wringing much out of a high-compression 4-banger will not be very fruitful without lots of $$$. Unless we get a 'gift' and the motor is rediculously over-built and you can bolt-on a turbo. Even then, the level of boost would be very questionable. These will probably go the way of the RX-8. Great handling, but way to expensive to really get more HP from the engine without an entire swap.

It has already been confirmed that the same engine will be turbocharged in other applications, so it's definitely designed with boost in mind.

My understanding is that it will have a 12.5 compression ratio, hardly a great engine to bolt a turbo to.

Subaru has confirmed the ENGINE from the BRZ may be adapted to have a turbo, but not in the BRZ. Also, they have been pretty adamant to get the WRX or STi if you want a quicker car with more power. I wouldn't hold me breath for one myself.

Gotta agree with Exar on this one. Very little low hanging fruit on an engine like this. Look at porsches 2.5 and 2.7 Boxster engines-gotta spend 5 grand for an additional 25 at the wheel.

Gonna be swap or die on these.

Well there are rumors that Subaru will release a BRZ STi which should be turbocharged. They claim it will put out 300hp, but i'm not sure about that number as it would affect sales for the wrx/sti. Also rumored is that toyota will release follow suit and release a turbo version as well.

Though there would be some overlap, I don't think WRX/STI sales would be completely cannibalized. For instance I live in Wisconsin. My wife got a WRX for the AWD. Thus, she would not have cross shopped the BRZ. Some people may also want the 4 doors with adult sized seating in the rear.

On the flip side, Subaru should not miss the opportunity in case the Scion gets a turbo. People who wanted a turbo BRZ would probably settle for a turbo FRS instead of a WRX/STI.

I wanna see someone drive it with grip in mind.

Sorry, but I really don't like Chris Harris. He just talks a bunch of bull; there's almost no real content in his videos. He's too abstract about it. "Steering feels positive." Well what the hell does that mean? And then he says the car is neutral with a bit of safe understeer, but then he says it oversteers just a tad. What the hell? So what, it oversteers when you floor the throttle in a turn, like any other RWD car? Which is it? This guy is useless.

Still, this car is just hype. Nothing else. Show me some factual numbers.
