Asus Probe temp for this case after a Sandra benchmark -- CPU: 89F / Motherboard: 82F (1sec intevals). It's higher than I like since I'm using lower RPM fans to keep the system more quiet (Vantec Spectrum fans). Before switching cases and fans (Antec 1030 SOHO case and Sanyo 39cfu fans), the CPU was running around 72-78F on idle, and the same for the motherboard.

I wasn't reccomending it. It's way over the top for your needs, and over priced. Newegg didn't even exist when I bought it.

Thermaltake SILENT BOOST Highest Performance Cooler for AMD AthlonXP up to 3400+ -RETAIL

First things first AG, get yourself a different fan would be my suggestion. Look at the Nominal Speed (RPM) on your fan: 2450 RPM. That's kinda low in my opinion. The CPU SHOULD have come with a stock heatsink/fan.....look into that and you should see an RPM of 5000 - 6000 RPM...which is what you want.

Just food for thought.

DDR3 is better. DDR2 is like Rambus RDRAM. It sucks. Intel's second bad memory decision. DDR3 has DDR2 speed and DDR1 latency.

As you can tell from the previous statement, DDR2's biggest issue is latency.

At first i was getting an OEM, 2600+ Athlon XP-M but now i am heading toward the A64. Thanks for the food though. Thxs for clearing that up, do they have DDR3 out for mobo's?

I like ATI also, why would you suggest NVIDIA in my case? That card you got there is very nice, whats the difference between PCI express and x16?

RDRAM doesn't suck. In fact it's much more stable than the other memory (EDO and SDRAM and DDR). This one stick has lasted 3 years 24/7 and even with all the problems with the motherboard, Memtest86 shows it's flawless on 3 tests even on turbo mode. Had 2 sticks of expensive Crucial SDRAM memory fry within that time. It's because of that experience I went with RDRAM. Even my tech relative (who has like 40,000 Seti work units and keeps his PC800 system on 24/7 crunching them) hasn't given that memory up. It's a workhorse, and v-e-r-y stable.

WOW, i was justing that article and x16 can handel 4 Gigabytes/sec in each direction, but were at 2.5 Gigabytes/sec , is thats alot faster than 8x AGP? So this PCI express is going to be a must have on a A64 system.

EDIT: I think ur link is messed up.

The potential bandwidth isn't the issue. Desktop video cards barely scratch AGP 4x bandwidth. What is the issue is that ATi and nVidia are likely to stop producing AGP cards except for mid-level and consumer-level cards.

No. But it doesn't matter. Very few boards have done away with PCI altogether. Even my Tyan board has one, albiet unusable.

Epox "EP-8RDA6+Pro" NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL

Okay, now that board is a great board. For my personal preference, and what I DID choose, thanks to my Brothers advice (you know who you are Bro (GrassR00t)!...thanks!), I would have chosen the following Chaintech board, which I DID choose, and am curently running with NO problems!:

CHAINTECH "7NJL6" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-152-045&depa=0

This board is $56 (shipping included) vs your board, which is almost $100. Don't get me wrong....there's NOTHING wrong with your board...this is all just my preference & opinion.

I would chose the Chaintech over that particular asus because of the chipset.

Thank you ribbon13! My point exactly! nVIDIA is what I would suggest for a gaming system...since 95% of the games out now sport the nVIDIA screen...NOT an ATI screen. Gamers = nVIDIA...for the most part...and according to my opinion.

Don't get me wrong...ATI is fine for some....but I guess it's a matter of preference. I would rather go with a card that the games are designed around is all.

Ati card. I like ATi better, but... and it hurts to say this... You would be better off with the nVidia card.

True enough ribbon13...but according to anthony88guy's first post, he does, in fact, have an AMD Athlon XP (not 64):

AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2600+, 266 MHz FSB, 512K L2 Cache Processor,45 Watt - OEM
Model: AMD Mobile Athlon XP
Core: Barton
Operating Frequency: 2GHz
FSB: 266MHz
Socket: Socket A

So...unless I am mistaken, since it IS a Socket A...that Chaintech board I linked would be perfect....but again, that's just my opinion....no insult to anyone was intended.
