Hello all,

I have a cable modem connection and my friend has a cable modem connection what software could I use (cuteftp?) to directly connect to his computer and trade or share files from him?

2. can I do the same thing with a cable to dial up connection and dial up to dial up?

3. and how would I go about configuring the software to do so?

Peace,
MN

ok you have three choices
1. it has been a while since i have used icq but you can do file transfers that way
2. i hate to say it but aol instant messanger has this neat little feature that you can share a folder while you are logged on thay anyone who knows you can check to see the files in it and start a download (i dont' know maybe icq has this feature too now)
3. get a program that will allow both of your computers to act as ftp servers and then u can use something like cuteftp to log into each others' computers (i don't know of any off hand)

oh those are all the things i can come up w/
but i do know you can't share like a dial-up type thing (ie one computer dials directly into another using something like pcanywhere) w/o/ some tricky software that i have yet to find

Can not the MS Accessories program Hyperterminal be used for this purpose?

ICQ would be the easiest way to transfer files one at a time (newer ver than mine may improve on that) or Netmeeting lets you do lots of stuff if you have a decent sys. These are the only common free Windows programs i have used on the Net.

Other solutions (Not the best):

You can always hop on IRC and DCC send and receive files. There are numerous IRC clients for all sorts of platforms. The most popular windows one is probably mIRC and the most popular Unix one is probably BitchX.

I personally think the setting up of an FTP server is the best. Only one of you needs to set-up an FTP server, not both. The one running the server puts files he wants to share in the directory that it allows downloads from and creates an incomming directory. The other person can download the files from the download directory and upload to the incomming directory. I would use an account and avoid anonymous FTP for security reasons, you don't want to find a warez site running out of your incomming directory.

There are a number of free FTP servers, do a search for "FTP servers" on http://www.downloads.com if you have to. War FTP is supposedly pretty good as Prodigy said.

There are also websites out there like http://www.freedrive.com. I have not used any of them so I don't know anything about them.

Edit: Changed to links.

I think ICQ would be the easiest way. And yes, you can do multiple files at a time.
