Can something come from nothing?

Had an argument with a thiest that there had to be a creator because something can't come from nothing. That our universe was created by a creator, because it couldn't have been constructed out of nothing.

Isn't there some type of proof that molecules can form out of nothing? I thought I'd ask you fine people first before I did a Google search. Tbh, this thiest had me mad. He was screaming at me about why God existed. 😡

I'm not sure ... but if you shoot me your banking info I'll be happy to demonstrate the opposite effect!

😉

this is a losing argument. the religious and/or theists use shit logic all the time on purpose to get you to believe what they believe. They dont want debate. They want conversions.

His opening statement was a major non-sequitur and that discussion always degrades from there. I know, I've been foolish enough to engage.

But where did that creator come from? If something can't come from nothing...where was the creator before "he" created something?

A god is Something too. Unless it doesn't exist. All they have noted is that Something must have always existed and they call this existence "God". The fundamental Something would make God(s) possible, but ultimately it would make Us possible as well. The difference between Creator God(s) and Us would be that they have come to Understand the fundamental Something sufficiently to create essentially a Simulation we call the Universe that has certain constraints that separates Them from Us, although not necessarily intentionally. We could actually just be an unintended consequence of a flawed design, not the Purpose of the Universe, but rather a Side Effect of it.

Or we could just be a Contender amongst potentially Billions or more all vying to understand what the fundamental Something is, thus giving anyone who knows it the power of a God. Possibly.

ScienceMan to the resuce!!

1. can something come out of nothing?
A: yes. it happens all the time.
2. did a lot of something come out of nothing?
A: ...

we do not know what the fuck happened during the big bang. if there was a big bang. we do not know.

The current most likely .. ermm .. the current most centrist hypothesis is that a big bang occurred. Prior to this big bang, all the matter - an infinite amount of matter in an infinite sized universe - was existing in a state which we do not understand, but that eventually exploded. We also assume that it was infinitesimally small. So small, it's debatable whether it actually existed in space, also, as space-time as we understand it is a product of the behaviour of matter in its current state.
There is pretty solid evidence through the microwave background radiation that a massive explosion occurred during the early stages of the universe, and while it is still so early and our data is so embarassingly insufficient that the actual truth could be COMPLETELY different than what we hold now, the current hypothesis is that everything was inside a dot so small that it basically didn't exist, until a moment when God said FIAT LUX and .. oh shit.

TLDR: are you really expecting a tldr version of "how did the universe come into existence" ?

This actually hits home for me. I went to a VERY small Baptist school growing up. Like less than 100 students total small kinda school. Anyway, my 8th grade teacher was bashing on the replicator technology portrayed in the Star Trek franchise claiming it would never work because you can't take nothing and create something out of nothing. She proceeded to twist this into a logical argument on why the Big Bang theory would never hold up.

So being a Trek fan at the time I raised my hand and asked her how God could exist because if you have nothing how was he created? To get to the point I was simply told "God has always been and always will be". Needless to say I spent the next TWO Saturdays in detention because of my honest question....🙁

Something...something...zero-point energy...particle-anti-particle creation...cosmic foam...something...black hole evaporation...something...something.

That's a summary of what I remember from a physics degree. Hope this helps.

Is that some kind of underpants gnome theory?

It might as well be, given what a sad wreck my memory of what I once sort-of knew, has become. I'd suggest the OP read up on particle-pair creation in wiki, but I don't think any of that really proves or disproves antyhing about 'God' anyway. People believe in God because it benefits them in some way to do so.
