I think I tried this method before. Doesn't this one work or not work depending on how many posts someone displays per page?

Working for me, I assume the post you want to reference starts with... "No, jackass - take your off-base assumptions and shove them."? It might give the impression of not working for a moment since the page needs to fully load first, during which time the top will be displayed - even on 1.5mbit dsl, a 100-post page, especially a flamefest like that one with a lot of nested quotes, takes a second or two for me.
