Hi all,

My first post here. I have plugged in hard disk, video card, ram etc before never assembled a complete system. About to do that now and here is config - http://secure.newegg.com/NewVe...WishListNumber=7102107
Can you please suggest if E6750, or E6850 or Q6600 is best for me given below requirements(I prefer to not overclock at all or overclock slightly). Pls feel free to give any suggestions regarding other components also if you think my choice is not good

Note: Already bought the case, RAM, Hard disk(a maxtor 500 GB), wireless card. Rest are yet to be bought.

Requirements
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do not need SLI. Not very particular about Overclocking. Plan to triple boot Kubuntu, Windows 2003 Server and Windows XP. Will add Vista later.

Windows 2003 Server is for a development environment with Visual Studio 2005 , SQL Server 2005 and such installed.

Windows XP is for playing games once in a while. Also I use it to work on Oracle, J2EE (Eclipse IDE used) , SQL server etc and will have a few servers like weblogic, websphere etc running there.

Kubuntu is primary OS and in it I do a lot of browsing, downloading, DVD burning, video encoding to an extent, video capturing (TV tuner and HD usb stick), Java/J2EE/Perl/CGI/MYSQL Development. In addition I have a RSS aggregator with abt 200 feeds right there on the KDE desktop. I also run a Windows XP virual machine (need this to play chess on playchess servers without having to boot back into Windows). I will also want to run a desktop sharing application to be able to access my desktop remotely hen I'm not at home

I am getting a notebook in about 3 months and will use that copy of Vista and install it on my desktop. in that time I'll also upgrade to a NVIdia 8 series card to make use of Directx 10. I'm not very much into gaming. When I play, I do like good graphics.

Appreciate your help.
thx,
JJ

If you're not into gaming, I would go for the q6600 and not overclock it. They tend to run warmer.

Would an overclock of Q6600 from 2.4Ghz to 3.0Ghz be considered slight?:) If that's something you don't want to do, that then go with E6850 clocked at 3.0Ghz stock, it's a monster CPU, you won't be sorry.

For your suggested uses, you'd definitely be happier with a Q6600, I would think. It's what I would be buying, if I were in your shoes.

Agreed, Q6600 would be a good match for you.

I would not consider a 25% OC slight. Slight to me would be in the 10-15% range.

*sigh*

you need to STOP what your buying, and do some research on these forums about Q6600.

Just type the word Q6600 in search in both this section and case and cooling section before you think moderately overclocking a quad is a simple task.

First off, if you get a QUAD, you need and i repeat need to buy either a prelapped Thermalright 120Ultra Extreme, or lap one yourself or a Tuniq Tower or (Get on a medium class water setup, if you want 3.4ghz+) Max i would hope on these girls on AIR would be 3.375.

Then you need to research on how they overclock, and what you need to do to get these girls to play nicely. Expecially POWER SUPPLY / BOARD / RAM combo.

Overclocking a quad expecially a B3 stepping is not a simple task to do, expecially when they heat up 2x harder when fully loaded then a regular C2D.

hey thanks :). Like I mentioned, I never built a system before. kinda assumed overclocking a Quad will be easy..my bad.
I guess I'll just keep it as is.
