Not to do anything bad or destructive, but i have been trying to learn for a while and there is nothing i can find to teach myself except stupid things like how to get an AIM password, and thise dont even work. I really want to do this to better my understanding of Linux and to learn more about computers. I feel that i know alot about computer hardware, but i dont really know enough about computer software and things like that, so i think that this could teach me. Does anyone know were or how to learn to do this?

I believe the term you're looking for is not hacker, rather, script kiddie. And believe me, you don't want to become a script kiddie.

There's three different paths you can take, all of which are deeply intertwined; You can choose to learn more about networking, programming, or operating systems. If you want to get more into networking, i suggest getting CCNA courses and studying off of them. If you choose programming, start off with a simpler language like Perl or Python, then move up to system languages like C. If you choose to go into configuring operating systems like *nix, use the OS frequently and read the documentation heavily. No matter which path you choose (or all), never be afraid to ask for help, but always, ALWAYS RTFM before you do :) And if you plan on buying books to help you through, you can't go wrong with O'reilly publishing.

note: this isn't the only way, this is how i learned

No one is going to tell you how to crack your friend's AIM password because no one wants more script kiddies prowling the internet.

Impressing your friends eh?

They must be pretty l33t with computers if you think you need to do that...

You may start with friends, but if you get better at it, then it could go other places and you could get into some serious trouble. Personally I just stay outta even wanting to learn how to hack. I don't need to be messing with someone else's computer, and wish the same respect would be placed upon me.

Jobberd: Really you have been the only helpful person to reply so far, and i appreciate it. I am just trying to say that the only reason that i want to learn this isnt to hack my frends AIM password. That sht is gay.

Just restate what you want to do in your title, and youre bound to get friendlier responses. People usually are scornful when others say "teach me to hack". Ask instead something along the lines of "can anyone show me the way to acquiring more skills in computing?"

I think the best way to do it is to take a course at your local community college. I have a bunch of old Visual Basic books that I never bothered to sit down and learn with - no self discipline. Taking some courses kinda "forced" me to learn VB. I took two VB courses and now I know most of what VB can do.

Start simple. When we first got into programming at high school we used Turing, it was really simple, and easy to use. And you could make something ( read: graphics ) in one sitting, so you wouldn't be overwhelmed and you felt like you had actually made something.

Turing is a pretty basic programming language, I used it to learn and thought it was pretty usefull for learning how to do the basics of prgramming.
