Can Someone Recommend A Good GSM Phone

If I go to a GSM carrier such as Cingular, can I use mutiple phones.

For instance, I have a "work" phone and a "play" phone. With Verizon, if I want to change phones I have change the ESN online. Just takes a few minutes, but it can be a pain.

How does it work with GSM?
