I'm trying to decide between a phenom II or core i5 build for my gf, and when im building a budget i looked up 4gb of ddr2 memory and 6gb of ddr3 memory on the egg (which is a relatively good gauge of market prices.)

AND I SAW an average of $100 for 4gb of ddr2 memory and $150 for 6gb of ddr3 memory....

Going off of slickdeals you can buy a Lenovo y550 with t6600/4gb mem/320gbhd/dvd/Nvidia GT230m/ for freaking $519.

Yet 6gb of pc memory is $150-200 dollars.....

Please explain!!!

ddr3 prices have doubled since the summer

i bought 3x2gb ocz kit for 95 a few months ago. the exact same kit is now $185

Yeah, DDR2 prices have shot up over the last few months. DDR3 is gradually getting cheaper, though. Maybe hold off on building for a month or two and 6GB will be down to $100 or less (looks like prices start at about $130 on NewEgg, not $150)

Half a year ago, couldn't you get 4GB of DDR2 for like $30-40? I guess those days are gone.

Since RAM prices had been falling like a rock, every manufacturer out there reduced their fab starts and supply went down. Apparently, it went way down, and demand is much higher than supply.

This is prob. related to why there is still some inventory issues with Intel's SSDs

I remember when I wanted to upgrade my Presario laptop from 32 MB to 64 MB of Ram and Compaq was charging like $200 for a 32 MB chip.

The dramurai have admitted to fixing prices umpteen times over the years.
Wouldn't surprise me if they are doing it again.

Never plan to buy memory during the holidays. Big companies like Dell buy it all up and it causes stock to drop so demand increases as do prices.

Exactly.

and B.S. to supply and demand excuse. No other PC components more than doubled in price in the last six months. Except for brand new items, component prices are always going down, except memory. And it just happens that memory companies are the ones who have a record of price fixing. Expect them to be investigated again.

You would think the DoJ would be watching them more closely after all 7 of the major makers plead guilty or were convicted of price fixing.
