thanks though. it shows me where the problem is. at least you could get it to ask you for a pw. it won't even let me connect to any ftp. I'm on a school connection and was just wondering if there was a problem with the server.

Probably your school have a proxy.

Mine has one. I always have to bypass the proxy to get to an FTP (or anything that uses the 19,21,8080 port... )

Yep, your school is probably blocking port 21 (along with a host of others),
you gotta go for a non-standard port.
