Can someone identify this car part?

Link

Link: Entire engine compartment

As the image is labeled. I know that the object on the right is the air filter, as i changed it about 10,000 miles ago. However the part to the left, as noted, i don't know what it is.

Can someone tell me what that is, and if i can replace it or not.

I am going to autozone (or another store if needed) to get the air filter for the car, as well as for my moms van (hasn't been changed in >40,000)

Thanks,
-Kevin

distributor cap. underneath that is the rotor. Get somebody to help you change those and the plugs if it has been more than 50k miles since a tuneup.

Ok, is that something i can pick up at a local autostore? Additionally, how hard is it to change it. I attempted to get the top off but just ended up (when twisting) shaving the plastic off.

My car has 97,000 on it btw. Also, something about a Cabin Air filter sticks in my head. Is that anywhere around, or is there any chance that that is the cabin air filter.

If i'm not mistaken the dist. cap is above what he has circled. Taking off the top of the box would probably help identify what you have circled.

Does anyone have any ideas for getting it off? I tried prying it with a screw driver, but the plastic is too soft 🙁

No. The LABEL is on the DC, but the circled part is the large plastic cover. THAT looks like a cover for an ancillery device, and in this case the Air-con pump. See the belt that goes into ot on the left?

I could be wrong tho. Does this car even have AC?

That belt actually doesn't go into it. It is below it. I just couldn't really find a good place to take a picture. If you guys need a full shot of the entire engine compartment, i have a pic that i can upload as well.

looks like there's a screw and a plastic clip on the right corner of it, maybe try that?

Hmm.. I'm inclined to agree, although at first glance I'd have said it was the air filter, what with the boxy appearance, snap release clip and the label on it saying 'AIR CLEANER SERVICE', but apparently it's not. Maybe a second air cleaner for the A/C system?

More photos (maybe one from directly above)
and more info about said mystery component, please!

...or just wait until someone who's actually dismantled one of these puppies tells you

According to my Haynes manual what you have circled is the air filter housing if that is the V6 engine. I'm stilling trying to figure what the thing you marked as the air filter is.

EDIT: Scratch that. The general picture in the manual was mislabeled.

That actually releases it from the chasis so i can, if i disconnect the hoses, simply hold it. It does not take the cap off though.

is that the fuse box?

It has crossed my mind. Ill upload a pic of the entire engine compartment though.

Question: If you have no idea WTF it is, why do you want to replace it?

At one point i remember hearing something about it being a cabin air filter. Additionally, it is connected with the air filter, which leads me to believe that it is some sort of a filter.

Here is the entire engine compartment. It is an old car, so dirty but in very good condition for 97 grand on it. As you can see the part is in the lower right hand corner.

Thanks,

-Kevin

It is indeed a V6 Engine.

As for the other thing i circled, it is the air filter. I have replaced it before.

the thing circled is the air filter or the thing you have a line drawn to the air filter?

judging from the hoses that comes from it that hooks up with the intake, i'd say it's another filter.

The one i drew the line to, and labeled "this is the air filter" is the air filter. The thing circled that i am not sure what it is, is what i am referring to in the question. I thought it was an airfilter as well, but i dont want to take it off until someone else can verify it.

could also be a fuse/relay box

If you look in the second picture (i think i got it in there) the fuse box is on the far left side of the car. Also if it were a fuse box, there probably wouldn't be hoses going into it.

Two-stage air filter?

Im thinking that as well, but im not sure what part number it is or where to get it, or for that matter, how to get the top off.

I just need confirmation that it is an airfilter, and not something that shouldn't be tampered with.

The manual isn't much help by the way.... its unlabeled IIRC.

It would have wires and such coming from it if that was so, he said it had hoses coming from it.

OP if you can take it off and remember how to put it back on just see for yourself what it is. That's one of the ways I learned to work on vehicles.

Highly unlikely: no cables from it, it's foolish putting the fusebox at the front of the engine compartment where it could well get wet (eg the original minis!), and it has hoses for gas/fluid coming from it. And it's connected to the air filter. And it has a sticker on it with 'AIR CLEANER' on it.

I'd bet the fuse box would be under/in the glovebox or by the driver's feet where it's nice and dry. The japs are good for that.
