I know nothing of how computers work, I my Dell XPS sometime back in 2010 but lately as in the last two weeks my computer has been freezing up on me and lines near the bottom of the screen appear when I roll up or down.

I’ve spoken to 2 of my friends & they say it could be the graphic card which is an Nvida GeForce GTX 460, both friends have asked me what I’ll like to use it for using my Wacom Cintiq 12WX with Photoshop CS5 while live streaming drawing.

Apparently I hear Radeon is best for this would, if so what would I need to upgrade my stuff or shold I jusy get a new PC.

If you have lines on your screen, it's usually either the monitor or the video card. If you're happy with the performance of your PC, then you don't need to upgrade the entire machine, just the video card.

And while I've never used Photoshop, I think CS5 is CUDA accelerated, so it will perform well with NVidia hardware. If you want to spend the least amount of money possible, you could just buy a used Fermi class video card like the GTX 580 which has good compute capability, depending on whether it will fit in your case and your power supply can handle it.

If you want to go the Radeon route, I'd go for one of the 7000 series as they are strongest in that sort of thing. I would make sure your software supports OpenCL though.

Welcome to the AnandTech forums -- I've elected to move yor post to Computer Help, as you may receive more assistance with troubleshooting the issue there.

Once you've confirmed that it is in fact a graphics card issue, you are more than welcome to seek assistance with more in-depth troubleshooting or with recommendations for acquiring a replacement here.

Good luck with getting the issue resolved...

Please, post you're actual computer specs as the XPS name can refer to either a laptop or mini-tower. You might be right about assuming your graphics card is bad, then again you might not.

Although your monitor is currently connected via the Nvidia card, you also have integrated Intel Graphics available. The I/O panel on the back of your PC has an HDMI port that's used by the integrated (onboard) Intel Graphics. To test if the Nvidia card is bad you can connect your monitor via the the Intel HDMI port. I don't know if your monitor has an HDMI port (it may only have VGA and DVI), but you can get an HDMI to DVI adapter and use that to connect your monitor cable to the HDMI port. If the PC freezing and lines on the monitor stop occuring, then you'll know that the GTX 460 is the problem.

it gets no signal from monitorif I can it to DVI, and there are still line on the screen.

Thanks for your help but it looks like it's the card.
Should I just replace the card for the same as what's in it now or could I upgrade to a newer on? if I do that would I need to change the power supplies, motherboardand other stuff??

It's not at all clear to me what you mean when you say "it gets no signal from monitorif I can it to DVI". Do you mean that you did connect to the Intel HDMI port and it's still the same? Did you remove the GTX 460 before you connected to the Intel HDMI port? If that's what you did, and you're still getting the same errors, then it's not your GTX 460.

Just for your information, and to answer your last question; you're really only limited by your wallet. In the $250-$300 mid-range cards a GTX 660 ti would be a good choice for PhotoShop work, but will definitely need a PSU upgrade as the GTX 660 ti requires a minimum 450 watts, and the XPS PSU is only 350 watts.

You need to be careful about the PSU dimensions that will fit inside your Dell case, so before you order a new one take the Dell PSU out and measure it. As near as I can detemine, dimensions of 3.4" x 5.9" x 6.3" should be fine. As an example; here's a good quality Antec with those dimensions that's reasonably priced, and will handle the GTX 660 ti: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371059
