Can someone help me with the "Ken Burns" effect?

I posted this thread in Software but I'm not getting any help! 🙁

I'm trying to find simple, easy to use slideshow or photo management software that has the Ken Burns effect similar to that used in iPhoto. I want to use it to watch slideshows on my HDTV. The problem is all the PC software I tried that has it (Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 and MS Photo Story 3) all require you to render it to video first--which at 1280x720 will take a long time on my laptop. I want to watch it in realtime. I'm surprised Picasa hasn't added it yet, seeing as how they use a DirectX hardware photo rendering engine.

So far the best example I can find is a screensaver called Nostalgic. Download it (it's freeware and virus/spyware free) to get an idea of what I'm trying to do. Unfortunately, as a screensaver it lacks photo management and it doesn't have the ability to set the slideshow to music, save slideshow projects, etc.

WTF are you talking about

Are you willing to pay for the software? If you are, there is a freakin' laundry list that comes up on Google if you searched.

I'm willing to pay up to $70 for software that can do it. The problem is I don't have time to download and try every single application. That's why I'm looking for recommendations. Like I said, so far I've tried ACDSee, MS Photo Story 3 and Adobe Photoshop Elements (popular software) and it didn't work as I wanted it to.

Okay, well good luck. I'm not going to help after your little baby tantrum after I tried to give you a free solution.

And OMG it works too, set up in less than a minute

I hate to say it, but that runs like crap. Completely pixellated and its not filling the screen. Take a look at the video I posted.

Even I hate to admit it, but Macs just OWN PCs when it comes to multimedia.

Meh, maybe Windows Vista will do it...oh wait that won't run on my laptop, so I guess you're right.

Sorry if I was being a "baby throwing a tantrum" but I was trying to set this up for the family tomorrow and now I give up. I just find it ludicrous that an OS with 97% of the market doesn't have the software to do this (easily) in realtime.

Thanks for trying to help me though...I do appreciate it! 🙂

wait, i see you say you already tried ms photostory. what about it did it not do the way you want?

see above^

(i've made a whole wedding slideshow for a friend and got it to do all the effects i wanted it to do.)

dude, seriously, i'm trying to help. i didn't see the ms mention in the first post
I'm frustrated, sorry, didn't mean to take it out on you.

MS Photo Story 3 wants me to render to WMV before I can play back the slideshow. That takes too long on my 1.5ghz laptop, and even then there's NO option for HDTV so its downsampled to 1024x768 in 4:3 aspect ratio.

I'm looking for something that does it in realtime, like Nostalgic. I guess worst case I can use Nostalgic and have iTunes playing in the background.

Sorry if I'm being an asshole.

Lol, go stand on the roof of IAMWIZ's house, why would we want to help a stuck-up ingrate like you? go run and whine to mommy that we arent helping and maybe she will buy you some nicer software.

I answered your question in the correct forum sheesh.

Edit: maybe I didn't. . .I though you wanted something to render video in a KEN BURNS effect - not watch it real time.

Hmm . . .

Unless you've ported iPhoto to a Windows Platform your help is useless. 😉
Not completely. While PhotoShow doesn't do realtime, one of the google results pages led me to ProShow Gold from Photodex which claims to do it. There's a fully-functional free trial so I'm downloading it now...we shall see!

I don't need iPhoto for Windows...I'd rather have Google add this effect in Picasa.

hmmm, regarding the resolution for ms pstory3, you can set custom resolutions (see here, towards the bottom: http://www.papajohn.org/PS3-Saving.html). although i guess you'd still have the problem of rendering time; but i don't remember it taking that long or being to cpu intensive when i made mine.

in any case, photoshow 4 has been recommended before as well http://www.simplestar.com/photoshow_express_trial.php. it says the 'express' version is free but i don't know if that means completely free or just free trial.

Found it!

I downloaded the trial version, fired it up, and it works like a charm! Took me a few minutes to figure out how to set it up for 16:9 but now its all set.

Thanks for all your help guys!
