Hey guys , looking for some help building a budget gaming PC.

I'm not too up on my hardware these days and any help would be awesome.

I want to keep the price tag down but am willing to spend where i need too.

What parts should i put into this rig? i already have a HD and a case.

Thx in advance.

welcome.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=80121

and for god's sake be specific. what games? on what monitor? how much money?

Sorry, heres some more info.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.= gaming/surfing, email etc.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread.= id like to stay $600-$700.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.= Canada

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.= no preference.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are. I already have a harddrive , keyboard, mouse , OS and monitor running 1680x1050

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.= Yes

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds. Could go either way

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.= 1680x1050

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?= ASAP.

The first games i will be playing will be CODMW 2, WOW, CS source etc etc.

AMD 620 Propus $95

Gigabyte UD4P $110 ($95 AR)

Antec 300 $55

Corsair TX650 $100 ($80 AR)

4GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 OR G.Skill ECO $105

Sapphire/XFX ATI 5770 $160 (Sapphire is $150 AR)

Scythe Mugen 2 $40

This puts you at about $665 (U.S. prices off the Egg; BEFORE TAXES & REBATES). A nice quad-core machine with DX11 support that will help you play those games in the future 🙂. For gaming at 1680 x 1050, the 5770 is a great card, and the Scythe Mugen 2 will give you a very nice option of a medium-high overclock. You can always opt for the cheaper dual-core option: A cheap dual-core combo and take the money towards a 5850, but keep in mind you currently game at 1680x1050, which a 5850 would be overkill for. None of the games you've listed so far are CPU-heavy, but I don't want to tell you what games you can and can't play, so a quad-core option should keep you safe.

Thx for the Great reply, do you think that setup could handle any game out there right now at 1680x1050 on decent settings?

is the 5770 equiv to the 4850? only difference being DX11 support?

How is the stock AMD cooling fan? I probably wont go hardcore on the overclock.

Also, How far behind are AMD quad-cores compared to intels? can you "really" feel the difference in everyday use?

Thx very much🙂

5770 is equivalent to the 4870. It can handle any game at 1680x1050 on med to high settings.

The AMD stock fan is fine if you do minor overclocking. But fan is something you can change easily down the road when you feel like you need to overclock more.

AMD quad cores are less powerful than Intel's quad cores in general, but as always, are cheaper in price. There are currently no retail Intel quad core at the $100 price point to do a fair comparison. You're not going to really 'feel' the difference between AMD and Intel, as quad cores are plenty fast for most everyday usage. Since your budget is not high, the Athlon II X4 620 will serve you well.

Thx for the Reply, someone was saying that the 5770 was laggy when in intense battles in CODMW2? can this be true? somehow i doubt it?

Thx

At 1680 x 1050, it can run CoD:MW2 just fine. It's a really nice mid-range card that will be able to play later games at 1680 x 1050 too. OC'ing is pretty easy on the stock cooler.

I added the Scythe Mugen so you can do some nice overclocking. For its price, you get some damn good temps. If you aren't going to overclock though, you saved yourself $40 😀.

You dont need a PSU nearly as powerful as that. Drop it to a Corsair VX450 or a Corsair VX550.

I have an Athlon 620 with a 5770 running with a VX450, with no problems. Also, it runs every game I have fine at 1920 x 1080. It can do Crysis on High at that res, but not very high.

Get yourself a third party cooler. The AMD cooler I've got for my past two AMD cpus has been beyond horrible. One was an Athlon 5600+ X2 purchased in the UK, the other was this most recent 620 purchased in South Africa. both had incredibly loud and ineffective coolers. Get yourself anything rather than the stock cooler. I'd recommend a Coolermaster Hyper 101 or Arctic Cooling Freezer if budget is an issue.

Remove hdd and just go with that PSU w/o case

You've posted that in another thread before haha. Like before, the only argument against it would be the 5830. Bump it up to the 5850 or down to a 5770/4890, with the 4890 being faster but no DX11 support. AT has an article of it recommended against it. Just an FYI for OP.

As said before with current pricing ($240-250), tech and frames output w.r.t GTX 275/HD 4890 i'd definitely rate HD 5830 a worthier buy than a HD5770 *if budget permits* Also i'd gloss over several reviews - no offence to AT reviews hehe

Granted it is a faster card (and AMD doesn't fool around with pricing), but if you were going to spend that much on a card, I'd just squeeze out ~$40-50 and grab a 5850 and OC it. But in all honesty, a 5770 can handle 1680x1050 just fine

In their February 2010, Maximum PC posted the following specs, under the headline "Build a crazy-fast $647 PC" - these are Newegg prices:

Videocard Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 $166 www.sapphiretech.com
Hard drive Seagate 500GB Barracuda 7200.12 $55 www.seagate.com
Optical drive Samsung SH-S223C $26 www.samsungodd.com

Will be a fast PC indeed. Maybe spend a little more for a DDR3 setup. With the new hexacores on the AM3 platform coming out, tough to say that the socket will be obsolete for most users 🙂.

Well for naysayers claiming Thuban/Zosma is AM3 only - one of the lowest end Gigabyte 760G/AM2+ mobos gets a spanking new BIOS to support those incoming chips @@

Wow those 2 builds are real eye openers for me! I was about to order parts for a friends build that was only email/web surfing with onboard everything and it came to $650.

how do you manage that?

onboard everything for just email/websurfing should be 300-400 max..
