Can someone hack you via ICQ?

Is it possible for someone to get hack via ICQ? I think someone was trying to hack me late last night, about 12am Hawaii time.

He contacted me via ICQ, requesting I authorize him. I asked him for his name and where I knew him from. But he would not state his name or if in fact knew him at all. At first I thought it was a fellow AnandTech member who wanted to add me to their ICQ list or just talk or something. Then he started to talk in some foreign language. I told him I didn?t understand a word he was saying, but that I knew he understood English because of his name, which was MAD MAX. Then he started some minor name calling, which did not bother me. I keep asking him for his name, about 7 times to be exact, but when he refused to tell me, and started acting like a two year old I got suspicious.

I deleted him/her from my ICQ list, in a matter of seconds he responded by saying ?suck my di*k you bumshit? or something like that. I then asked him again what his name was and if I knew him, and that I only wanted to know who he was so I could authorize him. He did say a thing, only ?are you crazy?? I also advised him not to try and hack me because it was virtually impossible. He never responded after that.

That?s why I?m asking, it seemed like once I told him it was virtually impossible to hack me he went away. So can it be done?

As far as I know, no, there is no way to hack someone simply because they are using ICQ.

As stealth mentioned, the SubSeven virus uses ICQ, but in a different way. The trojan sends the person who gave it to you your IP address and ICQ number, but it wouldn't be necesary for them to contact you through ICQ. However, if you didn't download the virus, there shouldn't be any worry. He was probably just a moron who decided to bother someone.

Ok, thanks guys, that's good to know. Yes, I do have a firewall and antivirus running 24/7.

A firewall and/or antivirus software doesn't make you immune to attack.

ICQ is a network service, and like any other network service, it is open to attack. There are many different ways in which this can be done, but just be aware that it can.

It's not possible, unless you give him access to your computer by accepting a file which could be a trojan virus.

I don't use antiviruses and firewalls.. I don't feel the need to. I've gotten viruses in the past, but that was when I was inexperienced and ignorant regaridng computers. Now I know what to accept, what to run, etc. I don't open suspicious emails.. The ones with viruses are so obvious anyway. As for ICQ, I only accept files from people that I KNOW, that way if it's something bad, I can go kick their ass for it. ;)

they could find your IP with just your UIN.

If you have Sub7 on your computer, then when you sign on, it'll give the client a ping that your computer is reading to get into

LOL...well my firewall doesn't allow me to accept files from anyone via ICQ. Even if I wanted to it wouldn't let me, or them. I know I could configure it to allow for it.

Anyway I understand the network characteristics of ICQ, and that was my reason for concern.

Check PacketStorm's ICQ section. Only exploitable hole is the dumbass user on the other end. IE: Send a trojan named hotxxxblah.jpg .exe
They see the .jpg, think pic, accept, then hit open without thinking.
