This thread should not be P&N, but let's figure out what and how exactly Obamacare affect most of us.

Apparently, if you make more than $45.6K/yr, you're liable to pay all of the health insurance cost. To whom? There are penalties if you don't get health insurance? How do I get in on this action?

Yeah, I'm too darn lazy to type the details of this thing, that's where you guys come in...

The short answer is no as in all likelyhood whatever finally gets implemented will have significant changes from the passed law.

For starters, anyone who is already covered by an employer plan will not actually see any drastic impact.

If you are uninsured right now, and remain so in 2014, you will incur a penalty of $100 for 2014, or 1% of your income, whichever is greater. In terms of how much it actually costs to get coverage in the marketplace, that varies significantly between states, and also depends on your income level. If you make less than 400% of federal poverty, you get a significant federal subsidy for your coverage. Some states have already published the premium rates for 2014, you should try looking that up.

Now it's officially called ObamaCare and not Affordable Health Care Act or something?

considering it says 'ads by yahoo' to the right hand side of the page, i'm guessing that's not a US government website.

We all die screaming! AIIIEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

Either that, or emergency-room freeloaders are finally forced to buy insurance instead of leeching off of the rest of us.

I dunno- my daughter's perscription went from $10 to free, and my health insurance premium went down $150/month because of provisions that people could not be denied insurance due to health risks (which was an issue at my work because one individual had a premature baby, costing nearly $2million in medical bills and making the rest of us pay higher premiums).

It's working out well for me so far :)

Emergency rooms can't turn people away regardless of coverage(or lack of). And a lot of of the "freeloaders" there are people that probably aren't doing taxes or in any way really concerned about being punished financially for not being insured.

It also doesn't take into account the massive medicaid (state funded) patient population that visits an ER and the broke states like IL never pay back. Local hospital near me was due over 30 million by the state of IL. Ill basically said "We're broke, sorry" and never paid up.

It's good to be the state! They can default without liability.

Wait, from what I gathered, you make more, you pay more. And there are still medicare and such, and the freeloaders still freeload, so really it's the middle class that's getting shafted, again. Amirite?

So when do we officially change our name to the Republic Socialist of 'Muricah¿¿

Your Congress critter should be able to explain it. The bill was passed eons ago and they've had plenty of time to read it and understand it. Reach out to him or her and put 'em in the hot seat. I'd love to hear the answer.

Remember that government order for an excessive quantity of ammunition? On January 1, 2014, the roundup of your meemaws and peepaws begins. "Death panels" was optimistic... these will be summary executions. Thanks, Obama.

Medicare is not exactly a freeloading program. Generally people who receive it have been paying for it throughout their lives. You may be thinking of Medicaid, but you have to be broke to get Medicaid.

Again, if you have an employer plan right now, there isn't actually much impact.

Are you insured right now? If not...I'm not sure how you can call others "freeloaders"

If you are paying for individual coverage now, I think you are more likely to be better off with the new rules in 2014 than worse off (depends on individual circumstances).

As far as I can tell the biggest effect is that there are more P&N threads in OT. I have yet to use the ignore list feature of vb, but it looms ever closer.

I do exercise personal responsibility for clicking on thread titles that might be construed as political, so this is not a dig at you OP. In fact, I think this one has gotten off to a good start with tongue in cheek responses and light-hearted discussion I find particularly agreeable.

From the government site:

The Affordable Care Act puts consumers back in charge of their health care. Under the law, a new “Patient’s Bill of Rights” gives the American people the stability and flexibility they need to make informed choices about their health.

View Key Features of the Affordable Care Act or read a year-by-year overview of features.

•Ends Pre-Existing Condition Exclusions for Children: Health plans can no longer limit or deny benefits to children under 19 due to a pre-existing condition.
•Keeps Young Adults Covered: If you are under 26, you may be eligible to be covered under your parent’s health plan.
•Ends Arbitrary Withdrawals of Insurance Coverage: Insurers can no longer cancel your coverage just because you made an honest mistake.
•Guarantees Your Right to Appeal: You now have the right to ask that your plan reconsider its denial of payment.

Costs
•Ends Lifetime Limits on Coverage: Lifetime limits on most benefits are banned for all new health insurance plans.
•Reviews Premium Increases: Insurance companies must now publicly justify any unreasonable rate hikes.
•Helps You Get the Most from Your Premium Dollars: Your premium dollars must be spent primarily on health care – not administrative costs.

Care
