Can someone explain why it may be better not to use dual CPU for Audio Recording?

I was hoping that someone could shed some light on this subject. I am building a machine for audio recording only. I have read information from several sites regarding problems with audio recording when using a dual-cpu machine...but I am not sure if this is definitely the case. Most information suggests that problems will arise with latency issues and incompatibility issues with the sound card. Does anyone have any suggestions with regards to using a single processor system vs. a dual processor system? Thanks for any help :)

I've read that most consumer cards (e.g. Live, Santa Cruz) have
drivers that don't work with dual CPU's.

I usually don't read up on stuff until it is too late and I have problems. Then I try to fix them. Good to see someone who is researching things first. Props on that one.

now, on to business. I don't know what program you are planning to use for audio recording, but make sure it is SMP compatible before hand. I used to have a dual P3 933 rig and it ran great with my GF2 and SBLive card in there. Played games on my own server just because I could. :) I never had an issue with my SBLive on the VP6 I was using. Played any and all games I threw at it.

If the recording program isn't SMP optimized, then there shouldn't be any issue with using it under a dual-proc system. I would bet that software will be your only concern.

If the software IS SMP compliant, then I would look into what Damascus said and see how much truth is available on it from reputable sources (I.E. sites like Anand or Hardocp)

Good luck and happy building

Thanks Damascus and Audiofight for the info. I was thinking the same thing regarding whether the software I use (Vegas and Soundforge) are SMP capable. I did some research and you are exactly right in that some sound cards are not SMP compatible (can you believe that the Creative Live! supposedly is?). Thank you both for the infomation...I am really anxious to get this project started. Oh...Audiofight...lol, I must admit that I am trying to change my "old" ways. I am usually the one to yell "Charge!!!" long before I check to see if my supporting "troops" have arrived. I am definitely learning the benefits of research before purchasing. Thanks again!
