i don't really care about anime one way or another, but every single female character seems to look like some variation of this: LINK.

just trying to understand,

no they do not all look the same, the ones that are done by the same person look similar but they are all different, and some are really out there

FLCL was all animated on a computer and it TOTALL different looking they say Kenshin which was hand drawn

well, to me they look the same. here's what a image search on google brings up:

this looks like this, which looks like this, which looks pretty much like this.

now i'm i'm not complaining about how it looks, im just wondering if anime fans just accept that the cartoon characters look similar. or, do i have to become a fan in order to see the differences?

just trying to understand,

this is a prime example of carefree american tv show watchner / moviegoer

thx for proving my point :)

and, uh, thanks for explaining it to me.

like i said, i'm not bashing anime like a lot of people here do, i'm just trying to understand.

i am not jumping at you either :p its hard to explain. to give you an analogy, for someone whos not into cats all the cats may look the same; to non-audiophiles, mp3 and flac may sound the same, but there are many that actually appreciate the difference. dunno, i guess it comes with watching more and more. hell, i dont think i have watched enough yet :p

do i have to become a fan in order to see the differences?
proboably :) btw, thats some old stuff there..

ok, maybe this is what i'm trying to ask: within anime, are there epsiodes/movies/shows that are known to look better than others? or is the look held constant and the story the differentiating factor?

you are getting at two different things. there is a preference for certain type of drawing which varies person to person. of course thats as subjective as it gets. for instance, there are many who swear by last exile for the drawing, but i cant stand it. on the other hand, shinobuden seems excellent to me. another facet is the quality of drawing apart from the style. quite a few series suffer a visible degradation in quality due to external factors like budget, lack of time and such. a good example would be oh-so-notorious sister princess (bad one). i am not into SAC, but still need to admit drawing quality is excellent. one of best i seen in a while was Kono Minikuku Mo Utsukushii Sekai, altho anime itself was a huge letdown.

so yeah, to answer your question, preference for and assesment of quality of drawing is a determining factor in chosing an anime for most watchers.

I always thinks Kono Minukuku is nothing more than Mahoromatic's clone (and this is supposed to be GAINAX annivesary release????), and I couldn't care much about the drawing style either. GITS:SAC however, has great drawing quality and mind boggling plot. Its one of the more complex anime out there.

For me, the reason I like anime is because I love those type of stories. Take for instance, Last Samurai with Tom Cruise. That has some elements, maybe all the elements in the show, of a good anime. It's just done with real actors instead of in "cartoon" form. The movie is revered, but the anime would most likely be rejected, even if it was the exact same story. Honestly though, if you ever take the time to read about how long it takes to make cartoons, and fully realize the detail and time that the anime artists put it, it's truly incredible (broken sentence I know). It's kind of ironic to me that paintings, sculptures, etc.. that artists take a long time on are heralded by all, and yet anime really doesn't get noticed here in the US. Try a different outlook on the whole genre of anime, and you'll realize that they aren't just childish cartoons with simplistic stories, they are intricately woven stories with deep, multi-level character developments with incredible detailed audio/visual elements. Someone point out to me the last time you saw a painting in a museum that related an entire story with cool sound effects and moving orchestral music. I'm not an anime fanatic or anything, but I truly respect what those artists do. Nor do I know the artists names or the rare anime, but I for one love watching DragonballZ episodes with my roommates and I've always been a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan myself as well. If you find your niche, go ahead and explore it, you won't regret it.

BTW VanillaH, nice posts about your views. I agree that these threads are rather pointless and I usually just hang out in the Hot Deals or FS/FT forums here, but I'll make a trip occasionally. It's refreshing to read a post of someone that is intelligent and just doesn't try to be funny, writing things about "tentacle pr0n" or whatever the crap that was. Kudos  to you!

well thats a good observation, considering it came for the exact same staff/makers, even the CV was nearly identical. to me it seemed like they added extra details to the bikes and such from already beautifully done mahoromatic drawing (interviews reveal they mainly concentrated on the details - one of the staff is a bike otaku  - and cuteness which i really like :))

thx, i do get sorta defensive at times and try my best not to :) the more you anime watch, the more you learn there is more to watch, read and play. i still got a long way to go in my otaku pursuit. my recent discoveries include School Rumble and Genshiken - arguably two of the most highly regarded mangas out this year :D

the anime girls all look the same cause every chick on tv looks the same. their bodies look the same, as close to 36-24-36 as possible. the only variation is their hair / eye color. their husbands can be fat, disgusting, obnoxious, and slovenly, but they still love and marry them for some reason. at least anime girls don't like their husbands once in a while.
