Long free series that are easily downloadable and provide good entertainment. Some are crappy I admit but some are pretty funny and its better to pop one on and watch it than have nothing to do.

it's a form of entertainment and as such doesn't really need a redeeming value. it's like asking to find a reason america is fascinated with "reality tv" at the moment. that crap isn't reality. reality is sitting up at 6:20 am cause you can't go to sleep and typing up an explanation on anandtech for people liking anime =P

i like this answer.

It's just like watching a movie or reading a book or watching cartoons or watching tv... why do people enjoy it? It tells a story and it entertains you... and anime comes in all forms, comedy, tragedy, action, horror... yada yada... watch a few, if you don't like, go watch some tv instead =)

Okay, this question gets asked and answered pretty much EVERY WEEK.

People like anime for the same reasons that they like Family Guy. Something different. New plots, new jokes, (sometimes) excellent art. New ideas, new concepts. Not the same cookie cutter crap that is on every sitcom. Not all anime is the same, lets face it, Charlie Chaplin and Schindlers List don't get lumped into the same group because they're black and white films, quit trying to equate Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex to Di Gi Charat. They're different. One features head shots, the other features big heads.

I like a good show that can make me think, American TV doesn't have that outside of the History channel and the occasional non-decorating/non-guys-in-a-machine-shop-with-egos show on TLC/Discovery.

Wel,l anime is generally inherently better then american tv. It's because most animes come from manga. Manga are written by one guy and a few editors helping (kind of like novels are) so they generally carry a very strong sense of art to the storyline. American shows are all about group meetings and trying to bring ratings up as high as they can go. This is why I feel I'm drawn to anime; I can't assure you it's right. It's just how I feel.

excellent point. in addition, even the originals like eva are <usually> intended toward much more critical audience compared to that of some american tv shows / movies, making them more likely to be higher quality (more attention given to details and etc)

Anime is a type of entertainment guys...it's like puppet shows. Do you generally hate most puppet shows?!

I think you have to be one of a few types of people to like anime to such an extreme.

1. Teenage boy that is an outcast from society
2. Fat old balding man that lives in his parent's basement. He is also an outcast from society.
3. A tentacle

here's my question: doesn't most anime look the same? is it the story line that's so intriguing?

i don't really care about anime one way or another, but every single female character seems to look like some variation of this: LINK.

just trying to understand,

I kinda liked Ghost in the Shell, but every other anime I've seen is too goofy for me to enjoy.

Trigun's pretty cute and has alot of light hearted humor.

A non-childish one can be called Key: The Metal Idol. It's a suspense with alot of serious plot and not much humor.

I don't get it either. Doesn't interest me in the least....at least anything past Starblazers and Robotech. These were Saturday morning or after school cartoons when I was a kid.

FLCL was all animated on a computer and it TOTALL different looking they say Kenshin which was hand drawn

I don't particularly love anime, but I don't loathe it either. I often find myself watching it late at night because it's much better than a lot of other stuff on TV, although that's really saying nothing.
It's cool to watch on drugs though.
