Can someone explain how to burn a working back-up of a game?

I usually just DL the no CD hacks but couple new games I got don't have them yet. I always seem to scratch the original CD's so I want to make a copy to use it and put original away. I tried to burn CIV 4 for example with nero ..selected "copy CD" and it burnt but game somehow knows it's not the original. Any help is appreciated. :)

You'll need dedicated software like Alchol 120% to do it, as Nero is unable to get around the copy protection of the CD.

Civ4 is complex from what I understand... many people have been using certain tools and programs which I'm not sure I'm allowed to mention here.

OK I've tried 4 tools so far. All latest verions of Nero, CloneCD, BlindWrite 5, and Alcohol 120%. Got 8 dead CD's now:|

Alcohol is very complex so maybe I'm doing something wrong but these bastards either a) need to use a harder plastic so disks don't get scracthed or B) allow you to copy them.

Mention them. You have legal right to back your sh1t!

But you do not have legal right to circumvent copy protection in order to do so, which is what these programs I'm referring to help with.

Not sure if this will work for software but for music CDs typically all you have to do is hold down the "shift" key when you initially insert the disc in your PC. But if you forget to do that the CD runs on insert and installs whatever .exe it uses that makes it not-burnable.

That's quite the paradox.

I tried Game jackel unsucessfully as well.

Indeed it is.

I use a registered version of Alcohol 120%. It works real good except you need to know exactly what the copy protection is. I use another program to scan a disk for copy protection, then used 120 to copy it. Also, it lets you run the image on a virtual drive so you dont need to use the CD, and has 20+ virtual drives.

What I need is a good piece of software that can ID the copy protection. I forgot what I am using, but it is not working anymore. Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah that's all nice and everything but CIV4 uses safedisc 4.6 alcohol only supports up to V3's. meaning you get coasters! Like I have 8. Try araysoftware.com for ID. (i have been learning a lot the last day about this stuff)

Murphy - thanks for PM.

Dannyboy- I hope you threw them at boxer or feinstien who voted for this crap.

[I once threw a CD at an elderly lady.]

Yeah, my mom still has it. She never could figure out what you liked about Boy George and Culture Club.

Shame that people who actually bought the game go through a much more difficult time to make a backup than someone with a usenet account, winrar, and dvd decrypter.

edit

also, since you own the original, why not download a torrent that includes the crack in the iso? Not that I'm advocating piracy....

I've used CloneCD and WinISO.
I dont think CloneCD breaks any encryption. So far as I know it works by looking at one bit and copying it over to the CD. Bit-for-bit. The entire disc.

EDIT: By the way, both of these programs are a biznitch to find.

I bought Civ4 myself, worth every penny. I was a bit surprised that there isn't even a cdkey.

I block all ports but 80, 443 and 21 so I don't get a letter about my kids ripping stuff off.. Many people I know got such letters. Sure I could do it but it's not right. But it is my right to copy my own media. That they make illegal to use processes to facilitate the copying I am willing to fight about since it's a paradoxical situation. Like saying you have free speech but only if we cut your tounge out.
