Can someone explain how Republicans came to be the racists?

I've been trying to figure this out all day. At what point did Republicans get the reputation of being racist? Was it at the same time Democrats got the reputation of siding with minorities?

Are we talking 1960s? 50s? 1800s?

No trolling please. I really want to figure this out.

Thanks!

When the entire Republican strategy became to appeal to the southern people who were anti civil rights... They became the group of old white men who fought change.

short Story:
In the 1960, the new Society being pushed by Johnson.

Democrats wanted to hand out the $$ to support social services and handouts.
The Republicans apposed such; better for people to pull themselves up rather than start to depend on the government dole.

Many of the under-privileged were minorities in the urban areas. Many of the urban areas were northern cities that were heavily Democratic leaning.

You can put the puzzle together from this point.

When you start the conversation like that you really can't be looking for any real truth.

I will tell you why, it's because of people LIKE YOU!

Look at the title of your post.

Why not use the title: "Can someone explain why Democrats got the reputation of siding with minorities?"

Most conservatives refuse to subscribe to white guilt, and are thus labeled as racist by everyone.

You do know that how and why are 2 different words, right?

Had to go down the wiki rabbit hole for a while but I think I have a better understanding now.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Democrats

That answered a lot of questions. I was having trouble figuring out how the south went from slavery to being controlled by Republicans who are seen as racist.

I don't understand racism and I am hoping studying the history of it may help me to understand how other people think.

Typical response, ignore everything that is said by others and divert attention. Consider yourself dismissed, again.

I don't know a specific time frame but I do believe it all started once the liberal/progressive democrats realized they could never win any debate with a conservative using facts and logic - so they resorted to calling their opponents racist in order to deflect the discussion away from the argument they were losing.

I saw it here and there in bits and pieces going back as far as the 1980's but it really didn't start to gain mainstream prominence until late 2008 / early 2009. It hit its peak around the time of the 2012 elections and is still very popular among the MSNBC commentators and talking heads.

VERY well said...I totally agree with you!

When in doubt, divert attention and play the race card.

Read up on Nixon's Southern Strategy. Nixon actively recruited folks angry over desegregation into the Republican fold.

You realize that "White Guilt" is just code-speak for racism, I hope. You divide America along racial lines for class warfare purposes at the bidding of your ideological masters, claim victimhood in the process.

It's shameful.

"Play the race card." This is a term used by racists who don't understand what the word means and then try to dismiss it casually.

Racism is racism. Many whites support affirmative action, a racist policy, out of guilt. . . White guilt is as good a term for it as any other, and is less verbose.

Because Republicans are the more realistic party, operating within the confines of what is rather than what they wish things could be.

That isn't why "whites" support affirmative action at all. That is all YOU and YOUR anger that you ascribe motivations to others in a way that expresses your anger. People support it because of the fact that there are still racists like you that simply can't overcome it... Therefore, AA is required to put others on a more equal ground. Let go of your anger and then we will need it less!

I'm not angry at all, what gave you that impression? And I am definitely not a racist, so please gdiaf.

Racism should be rooted out and destroyed. You do not fix racism with racist laws or actions however, you just reinforce it. You are trading racism against minorities for racism against whites, I find that just as despicable. Racist.

Republicans have concocted a fantasy of what never was and has convinced its foolish followers that such a fantasy ever existed and they should strive to get back those great times. Democrats have tried to move the racists forward, kicking and screaming, into the 20th century.. we are nowhere near the 21st yet!

You are not angry, therefore you tell me to kill myself. Brilliant. Thanks for proving me right!

Racism cannot be destroyed. The old generations cling to anger and fear. The new generations replace them and racism continues to be reduced. Until then, we enact policies to balance this out.

No you reinforce a racist worldview. Racists have had many rationalizations throughout history and your rationalizations are no different.

Because as soon as you got the media in your back pocket you can pretty much do what you want including blaming the opposing party as being the racists at the same time electing a KKK member as your leader.

It would seem you contradict yourself.

Although I agree it is hard to eliminate racism when those who claim to be working against it are enacting racist policies to "balance things out".
