can someone do me a quick favor... involves checking hardrive (possibly reboot)?

anyways i was doing some work when suddently my hard drive start making this wierd buzzing noise in a series of buzzez and then a stop, as if it couldn't load data. so then, all my programs started crashing (while the hardrive is still making wierd noises) and i decide to turn off my computer. I then turn it back on 1 min later and it cant get it to load windows xp and the hardrive is again making noises. So i decided to try again and same thing happens. I then turn the computer off for about 10 mins and go back and then it starts working, but now im thinking that possibly my hardrive is corrupted or soemthing, and during when it starts up (before loading win xp), when it says detecting ide drives, it now labels my harddrive as a number (possibly serial number?), which is my question. Im not sure if it did this before, i thought it labled it as its name: IBM 60GXP 60gig, and am wondering if anyone who has a IBM 60GXP drive could verify if in fact DOS labels the hardrive as a serial number and not as a name.

hmmm... what do you mean as in crashed? do you mean gone for good? becasue right now actually its working, however another thing kind of worries me

I did a scan on my hardrive (the one that removes the bad sectors) which required a reboot, however while doing the scan (second phase) it gave me a blue screen and said something like "windows has stoped to prevent your system from damages."

what do you think that this means?

also i know that the 60GXP also have had problems in the past, could that be this problem?
 
oh ya another thing: when i said serial number, i didnt' mean just numbers. it also has letters in it too for example 4234328-ERR343 or something similar to that (i know mine has the ERR in it), can anyone confirm that DOS does this
 
if you care about your data, go out now and buy another hd..then back up everything you need.. then RMA this hd to ibm.. do NOT run scandisk anymore as that will cause more stress on the drive and probably make it fail before you get a backup done.
 
When you do a directory listing in DOS, it lists the serial number, for example when you type dir it should show this at the top:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is XXXX-XXXX

However, that is the volume serial number, and doesnt have anything to do with the hard drive's serial number.

Not sure if thats what you're referring to in terms of labels. You can label your hard drive however you want. (For example, one of my hard drives is labeled "MP3s".

If I were you, I would backup your data ASAP and then download this program to see if your drive needs to be serviced:

IBM Drive Fitness Test

It will be able to tell you if your drive is damaged and to what extent... Additionally, IBM tech support will usually want you to give them the error code given from that program.
 
thx liquice, i will try doing that program.

I was on IBM website on the knowledge base section, and i was listening to sound clips of harddrives sounds that were malfunctioning, and i think mine has a "BAD HEAD" however, the website lists nothing about this problem, it only gives its sound, does anyone know what this means?
 
On a hard drive, the head is what moves over the spinning disc to read and write data. If it is misaligned it can crash into the spinning disc, or do any number of other things that can damage the data and the drive itself. Very bad thing. If it is simply bad, it may not be able to read or write data anymore.

Most of the time, bad hard drive sounds = failing hard drive, there's not really much you can do to fix it yourself. You just need to send the drive in for a replacement. Most importantly, get your data off of the hard drive ASAP! 🙂

 
Have you done a reboot with the case open to see exactly where the sound was coming from?? I recently had a problem with the little fan in my removable hard drive tray, sounded like hell.
 
yes i took the case off, and i definitly think it was coming ffrom the harddrive.

I did that IBM harddrive test and both times (i did quick and then advanced test) i got 0x00 which im assiming that there is nothing wrong with my harddrive... right?
