I'm in the market for a new LCD.
Can anyone explain the most important specifications?

And also recommend the best 18-19 in LCD out there?

How are Sony LCDs?

Thanks

LCD specs u want a very low response time the lowest at the moment is 16ms which is 12ms rise 4ms fall....that's for an individual pixel to change, however, 16ms response times are only available on 17inch monitors at this time and that particular matrix is made by the same company AU Optronics anyway. For 19inch LCD's the best response time you will find is 25ms at this time but that is still very good and you can game and watch DVD's etc very successfully.

You want high contrast which is the 500:1 ratio and you want a good brightness about 250 ccd should be ok.

You would probably want to find out the native resolution of the monitor and you'd want to find out the maximum vertical and horizontal refresh rates as well as the overall video bandwidth. Bare in mind that you don't notice flicker on LCD at say 60Hz the same way you would notice flicker on a CRT. They would be the important, things to remember also different manufacturers have different policies when it comes to dead pixels and dead subpixels although the manufacturing process is improving a lot so these dead pixels are becoming less and less. And if you don't have any dead(stuck) pixels when u pull it out of the box then you won't get any further down the track.

If you want more information on the physical characteristics of a LCD monitor check this link

Hope that helps.

As well if your video card supports DVI, getting a LCD with DVI vs analog connections would be preferable for the cleanest signal possible.

Read the link jaylllo

It explains all about those different aspects.

If your going for a 17inch the Hitachi CML174 I believe has a 16ms response time.
Benq also has that same response time as does Planar.

I like the Samsung series in 19inch and 17inch they just look awesome.

Also the AL922 which the link talks about is what I have here and it's pretty darn good too.

Yep, I read the link.

But, I still would like some more 17 lcd reccomendations? I am looking for something with a DVI input and clarity. Not so much for gaming or anything.

Lastly is there a reason why the DOT pitch of most LCDs is .26+?

I have a Hitachi 17" CML174SXWB with a 17ms response time. This one has had a lot of press recently. Take a look it would be in my opinion a good first 17" LCD, I doubt you would be disappointed. Mind you all resolutions other than the native (1280 x 1024) is not good at all, but this may be the same for most LCD's out there.

Well, I can give you some firsthand views n one LCd, the Dell 1800FP 18" LCD as I just bought two of them.

It has a 25ms response time so it does ghost a very tiny bit. It is something that you really don't notice after a little while of playing a game anyways. The brightness of the panel (350:1) is amazing. I actually have had to turn them down a fair bit. As for the dot pitch (.28), I see no problems with it. The text is razor sharp and I am extremely picky in that department. I am still fiddling with the Cleartype settings to get it prefect, but it looks pretty awesome regardless. The colors are vibrant although like any LCD, the blacks could be a bit darker... It has a native res of 1280x1024 but I don't see a difference in quality if the game is set to 1024x768.. These have both analog and DVI inputs which is great to have that option. Although I really don't see much difference between the two. DVI is shaper, but not by all that much. That could also be due to my vid card (9700 Pro) actually giving out a really good analog signal. These LCDs are either rebadged Samsungs or LGs, I have heard people say either.

Dell tends to have specials on these every 4 weeks or so if you are in the States, so if you do think about getting one, just wait a bit if you can. There are also generally dicount coupons you can redeem as welll to get even more off. Try asking either here or on the HardOCP Forums about how to get ahold of one the coupons..

I know it sounds like I work for Dell or something, but I am just so thouroughly impressed with these LCDs. As well, it does help give you a bit of a reference as far as the different stats go. But do try to see the LCD in action before buying though. Some people find that a 25ms response time is abyssmal on some LCDs, but on some like the 1800FP is is bairly noticable..
