>We appreciate your patience

Why in the fu*&$ng hell didn't they do this two years ago.
===

*** This only affects Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat servers. ***

We've updated the public security modules again. If you've been helping us test the beta security modules, you should remove the password from your command line and restart your server. The beta security modules are no longer being tested.

These security modules should detect most versions of OGC and report detected cheaters to our ban list server.

We're no longer using port 27013 for the ban list. You will now see traffic (in/out) on port 27011. This traffic is to/from the ban list server. Make sure you have this port open in your firewall.

Your Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat servers should update themselves automatically. If you find your servers are suddenly having problems, try restarting them.

We've been investigating the problems some servers have been having after we update the security modules (clients not being able to connect, etc.). We're still working on the problems. If your server has a problem updating to the latest security modules, please send me any details you have (including which OS you're running and your log files during the update) that will help us track down the problem. You can send this information directly to me (mailto:erics@valvesoftware.com).

We hope to resolve the server problems soon. We appreciate your patience.

Thanks.

I found the info on port forwarding for enabling banlist reporting useful.

I also find the new VAC (Valve AntiCheat) to work quite nicely and consider it a boon to the CS gaming community.
I rarely see cheaters on my server anymore and the cheat paranoia seems to be lifting.

I say this about Valve: BETTER LATE THAN NEVER.

Valve's VAC is really a beta testing platform for more software releases. Its a good thing they are really making their updates public, since it puts the cheaters on notice that their days are numbered. VAC is really an attempt to "plug" all available holes in their current client/server infrastructure.

VAC is shaping up to be better and better. VAC and Punkbusters technology is what the future of games are going to bring. Online updates for security modules to combat cheaters is a thing for all major game companies. The next (major) company to implement this will probably be Epic. Constant client/server updates is too costly and expensive to develop and maintain, but smaller, security minded patches is what will be implemented against cheaters.

Yes, a local server here in Hawaii has implemented this new module and so far everything seems to be working great.

Yes, it?s a shame nothing was done years ago, however with valve taking a more active role in CS, things should start to get better as far as cheating is concerned.

I've been following the CS cheat and anti cheat scene a lot before VAC was put in place.. and I'm very happy that it does so well. I'm also glad they're implementing global banning too.. I just hope they have everything covered in that respect.. so that nothing of the sort can be faked by the coders and cheaters

I'm a bit ambivalent about global perm bands. On the one hand I have no pity whatsoever for the cheaters who do get caught, but on the other hand I sure as hell don't want to see innocent people being forced to buy a new game because some buggy cheat detection thought they could see through walls. Previous cheat detection programs had false report rates that weren't exactly high, but one out of a thousand is still too high in this case ...

That?s wired because the server I play on stated a 24 hour ban. And that some people would have the chance to clean their system of any cheats they may have. The discussion came up because someone stated it was almost impossible in uninstall the OGL hack without reformatting.

Not true at all.

I tried OGC a while back to see what we non-cheaters were up against. OGC does put a few files and folders in various places within your cstrike folder and it may be hard to get rid of them all. However, deleting your cstrike folder and reinstalling CS gets rid of all vestiges of OGC.

No need to reformat your hard drive or even uninstall half-life. So don't believe that argument from people that they can't get rid of it.

:p

The 24Hr ban is only temporary... as they perfect the global banning system and collect more info on the cheaters.. they'll keep on bumpin up the ban time..

Haha... I should have known.

LuDaCriS66,

Hopefully for the cheaters as valve updates the GBS they'll get the message and stop using cheats altogether. Because I swear people are still using that cheat even with HLGuard (could just be me, but when I see someone run, not creep, around the corner and start shooting like he knew where everyone was I get a bit suspicious).

Indeed, there are still cheaters out there.

Here is a link that was an eye opener. Despite VAC and HLGuard blocks against wallhack, OGC has resorted to using footstep sounds to localize players through walls. Take a look at the bottom of the linked page.

Or here are direct links to the pix:

advice from the anti-cheat site: set mp_footsteps to 0

Give me a break! Turning off footsteps is worse than fighting cheaters. I have played CS a long time and one of the reasons I still play is I like the sound so much. Played on a server the other night with this setting and was thinking WTF, cant hear anything. Was like being blind.

Permabanning cheaters is a step in the right direction. But lets have solutions that dont ruin the game.

Yea, I agree about no footsteps being lousy. I only provided the link to the site for an example of the new cheat we have to contend with.

I agree, having no foot steps in like having no gun.

Slogun,

That was an informative link.

I have a feeling that forwarding this port will help with my connecting problem.
Am I missing something here?
Yeah, sorry. It seems like 19 out of 20 servers when I try to connect I get the "cannot complete connection" error. I am going through a gateway router and although any solicited traffic should make it's way through I have yet to find an explination for my problem.

Hmm... never had this problem. What router are you using, and do you have the latest firmware?

I only need to use port forwarding when I host a game (which is almost never). Other then that I've never had any problems with connecting to any games. You may want to check out your ISP. Or try connecting without the router, and see if you get the same problems.

I am with you on this, but I guess I'm just hopin for my solution to require as little energy as possible. Anyways I'm testin out my new router tonight, so we'll see soon enough. :)

isn't OGC getting updated every week though?... sometimes even twice right?... it's an ongoing battle... both parties aren't even getting paid for this right? :Q
